$$Blood-Ernest A, New
Smyma Beach, FL (AP) 82, one-time basketball coach at the United States Military
Academy and a veteran high school coach in New Jersey, died Saturday. Blood
played the game in the days when peach baskets were used as goals, and coached
it until foru years ago when he retired at Passaic, NJ, high and moved here.
Under his guidance Passaic once won 159 straight games. His record for more
that fifty years of coaching was 1,268 victories against only 165 defeats.
Blood was a YMCA associate of Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of basketball,
and he devoted most of his life to furthering it. Short and barrel-chested,
Blood was a top athlete in his younger days, playing football, baseball,
soccer and basketball, which in those days had nine on a side. When he retired
from the sport after coaching more than a half a century, he was known as
the dean of the nation's basketball coaches, his team having a winning record
of .855 per cent. His "wonder team" at Passaic High School in the 1920s won
159 games in a row in five and a half years. The string was ended by Hackensack
High School, 39-35, in February 1925. He coached at West Point in 1925-26,
winning eleven and losing six games. He coached St. Benedict's Preparatory
School in Newark, NJ, to five state championships. Blood was born in
Sommersville, Mass. He was a New England amateur wrestling champion at fifteen,
and later became active in YMCA work. In 1896, the "Prof" as her was called,
unwittingly had a part in creating the five man game, he was then head of
the boys department at the Brooklyn Central YMCA, the largest in the country.
It had previously been customary for two atheltic directors of the Y to play
oth the teams. It was ruled they would be barred as professionals, so the
seven man teams of the day were cut to five. His coaching career started
at the Boston Y and closed after a 25 yeear stay at St. Benedict's in September,
1949. February 7, 1955)

$$ Julius Miller Dies
at 75; Former Borough President
New York-Julius Miller, 75, former State Supreme Court justice and former
Borough President to Manhattan, died yesterday at his home, 22 E 88th St.
He retired from the bench in 1950 after serving for 20 years. He was found
dead in bed at 9 am by his wife, Diane. The family said he apperently died
in his sleep. Int the course of Miller's long-public career which began in
1919, his greatest single accomplishment-one that he enjoyed harking back
to as the years went by-was the construction of the West Side elevated highway
along the Hudson River. As Brought President, he fought for the project against
powerful opposition (it was on the calendar of the Board of Estimate 152
times) and finally had the satisfaction of turning the firs shovelful of
earth on the much-needed arterial project at Canal and West Sts. on May 24,
1929. The concrete and steel viaduct, the first of the nation's elevated
expressways, was subsequently named the Julius Miller Elevated Highway. It
was the late Mayor James J. Walker, originally a foe of Mr. Miller on the
highway project, who later insisted graciously, after he saw its worth, that
it be named for Miller. As Brough President from 1921 to 1930, Miller a Democrat,
was instrumental in changing the face of Manhattan. He built the ramp connecting
upper and lower Park Ave. through the New York Central Building; widened
all the avenues in Manhattan and built the center strip on Park Ave; adopted
the plan for the East River Drive viaduct from 155th St to 165th Sts, and
initiated the move to tear down the Sixth Ave. "El" and convert the avenues
into a major artery. An active, restless man, Miller kept on thinking about
Manhattan's traffic problems after his retirement from the Supreme Court
at the mandatory age of 70. A month ago in an interview he predicted that
the island's traffic snarl would get worse. He suggested a trans-Manhattan
vehicular tunnel under 38th St, and another such tunnel running the length
of Manhattan under First or Second Avenues. As a judge, Miller achieved the
distinction of never having been reversed by an appellate court on any of
the cases in equity where he decided suits without a jury. This was believed
to be unique among New York jurists. (February 4, 1955)

The long-time storm center of Democratic politics in New Bedford had been
operated on at the Norfolk Prison Colony Hospital. In 1953, while he was

cottonbrokerage business. Eleven years later, he was on the WPA relief rolls.
