of 83. She was born in Glasgow, Scotland and was the daughter of the late
Ebenezer and Amy Alexander. She was the wife of the late David Alperin and
a loving, caring, and supportive mother to her surviving sons, Lex Alperin,

in the Royal Air Force during World War II. Shortly afterwards she married
and moved to Greenville, SC where she lived as a homemaker. After moving
to Port Washington, NY in the late 1950's, she was widowed. In subsequent
years, Muriel worked at Publisher's Clearing House in Port Washington while
raising her two sons. Muriel spent much of her later years searching for
ways to help others. She co-founded and was very active in the "Brotherhood
of Concern", an organization which provided a support network for prison
inmates. Muriel was a member of the Shelter Rock Unitarian Church, and a
member of the Clare Barton Society. She was a former resident of Hadley House
in Port Washington, NY and last resided at Grace Plaza, Great Neck, NY. Services

$$Antonucci-Vincent,
74, of Bethpage, Veteran, Hardworking Family Man Vincent Antonucci put the
hereafter on layaway in November, 1986, when he made the first of many $55
payments on a tomb for himself and his wife, Rose, at Pinelawn Memorial Park.
It was a peculiar investment because Antonucci was frugal by necessity, the
type to change his own oil. And as a war veteran, he was entitled to a plot
and burial in the nearby veteran's cemetery, at no charge."He told us he
didn't want to be in the ground," said his daughter Dorothy Beekman. "I don't
know why. We just laughed. "He slowly paid off his debt out of a thick and
worn payment coupon book, which Beekman still has. By July, 1993, he paid
off the entire amount, $4,675, preparing far in advance for the last and
perhaps only luxury he allowed himself. Antonucci, from Bethpage, died Sunday
of cancer at age 74. Mourners may visit today from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9:30
p.m. at the McCourt & Trudden Funeral Home at 385 Main St. in Farmingdale.
His funeral will be tomorrow at noon at the funeral home. He was not particularly
rich or lucky, having had to work hard for what was by most signs a modest
life. He empathized with others like him, making sure to find the Made-in-the-USA
label before buying anything. He painted houses and drove trucks. He worked
in lumber yards and on highway crews. He was a firefighter and a farmer,
making his life with his joints and bones. He was never sick a day in his
life, his family said, until the cancer. He retired 10 years ago after falling
from a ladder and breaking his hip. Antonucci was well into his 60s when
he took his first real trip. He boarded an airplane for the first time in
his life to visit his brother, Al, who lives near Los Angeles. The brothers
visited museums and Howard Hughes' Spruce Goose airplane and drove to Nevada
to visit Hoover Dam and Las Vegas. "It's sad because I wish he had more fun,"
said Beekman, of Commack. "He mostly worked and labored. And when he finally
retired, he wasn't healthy. He really took good care of us. I just wish it
could have been better for him." Antonucci spent his final years taking care
of Rose, who was ill with Alzheimer's disease. He was so preoccupied he ignored
the pain in his gut that turned out to be liver cancer. When he was finally
diagnosed in September, doctors told him he had carried the cancer for at
least six months. "He was Mom's sole caregiver," Beekman said. "Of course,
he never got himself checked out." Antonucci was born July 11 to Italian
immigrant parents in Oppenheim, a town of a few thousand people between Albany
and Syracuse. One of five kids, he grew up in nearby Dolgeville, an equally
obscure town on the edge of Adirondack Park. He joined the Navy five days
short of his 18th birthday and was assigned to the destroyer Swenning in
the Pacific during World War II. He met Rose in Philadelphia while in the
Navy when his ship was in port. The couple returned to Antonucci's hometown,
where he joined the fire department and worked on a farm with his uncles.
Antonucci moved his family to Kings Park in 1955, where he got work in highway
construction. The family settled in Bethpage in 1960. In 1963, he joined
a wholesale produce company, driving its delivery trucks. In addition to
his wife, daughter Dorothy and brother Al, Vincent Antonucci is survived
by brother Fred of Dolgeville, daughters Donna Brower of Hicksville and Debbie
Antonucci of Deer Park, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. "Daddy
is a very exceptional person," Beekman said. "He touched everyone in his
life, even the little kids who grew up in the neighborhood. They just loved
him. He was a very giving man. He was the first one to welcome you into the
neighborhood."

$$DANIELS-Bill,-Los Angeles-
a cable television pioneer who blazed the way with Daniels Communications
Inc., died Tuesday after a long illness. He was 79. Daniels, whose life was
as varied as the viewing choices offered on today's cable systems, died at
Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, about 120 miles south of Los
Angeles, said hospital spokesman Harlan Corenman. Daniels began his love
affair with broadcasting in the early days of television, pioneering his
way into the fledgling cable TV industry. "He really was the father of the
cable business because it was he who persuaded people it really was a business,"
said University of Denver Chancellor Daniel Ritchie, who knew Daniels for
40 years. "It was he who got the ball rolling to build the great companies."
Daniels, a decorated World War II naval fighter pilot and former New Mexico
Golden Gloves boxing champion, also was a dedicated philanthropist whose
donations included a $22-million gift to the University of Denver. In January,
Daniels pledged most of his $1.4 billion estate to send thousands of
underprivileged students across the West to college. In recent years, Daniels
worked to bring the National Cable Television Center and Museum to Denver,
where it is based at the university. The school also named the Daniels College
of Business in his honor. Born in Greeley, Colo., July 1, 1920, Daniels graduated
from the New Mexico Military Institute in May, 1941. In 1952, he constructed
a CATV-Community Antenna Television-system in Wyoming, becoming the first
to relay a broadcast signal using microwave technology and giving residents
their first taste of easily accessible TV. His dedication to cable started
from there. At a time when talk of cable ventures was considered a crazy
notion, Daniels was determined to help make it a force in America's
communications. In 1958, Daniels founded Daniels & Associates to promote
investments in cable, and become one of the most respected cable brokers
in the nation. Daniels owned and operated hundreds of cable television systems
in the 1980s before consolidating most and selling them.

$$EBERLE-Olga A., 85,
Led Children On Educational Adventures Olga A. Eberle's son called her a
"gutsy lady," not least of all because she trekked across Europe with four
small children, or because she spent the entire summer of 1963 driving across
the United States-Bruce, Karen, Craig, Mike and a Nimrod trailer in tow.
"She enjoyed it but I don't know if you plan to go on a trip with four kids,
thinking it's going to be like a fun cruise," said her son Mike of Port Jefferson
Station. "I think she really did all of that for us." A former Garden City
resident, Eberle died Feb. 26 of complications from Alzheimer's disease at
St. Jude's Nursing Home in Portland, Ore. She was 85. Eberle was born Olga
Sokol in Maspeth, Queens, where she grew up and graduated from high school.
She met her husband in a Queens bar in the 1930s, her son said. A man was
making untoward advances, and she asked Walter Eberle to pretend that he
was her boyfriend. The couple dated on and off about seven years, then married
in 1942, moving first to Franklin Square. In 1953, they moved to Garden City,
where Eberle remained until 1983. She was active at her children's schools,
and in the Garden City Community Church. Mainly, she was involved in raising
her four children. She decided to chart a three-month educational trip for
them in the early 1960s, traveling by train through France, West Germany,
Italy, Belgium, Yugoslavia, Turkey, England, Ireland, Spain and finally through
the Strait of Gibraltar to Morocco. Her husband, who sold hosiery to Manhattan
retailers, flew out to meet them. The summer of 1963, she took the kids across
the United States, again, without her husband to help chaperone. She drove
an Oldsmobile Dynamic-88 the whole way, pulling a trailer behind it. The
group camped in Montana, Idaho, Wisconsin, Washington and California, the
most memorable stop being in Yellowstone National Park. A bear tore through
their metal cooler of meats, then roamed around the campsite, occasionally
brushing against the thin nylon tent where Eberle and her four children were,
terror-struck. "She just kept telling us to be quiet, in a whisper," her
son recalled. In all things, Eberle was committed fully. She was clear and
matter of fact in her ways, and people always knew where they stood with
her, family members said. Asked to name the most important lesson he learned
from her, her son Mike said, "Whatever you decide to do, do it the best you
can, give it all you've got." In 1983, Eberle and her husband retired to
Lakehurst, N. J., spending many months of the year at a second home in Boca
Raton, Fla. After Walter Eberle died in 1990, her children noticed she had
the early signs of Alzheimer's disease. She moved into a Port Jefferson rest
home until 1997, then moved into a nursing home in Portland, Ore., where
her son Craig lived. Besides her sons Mike and Craig, Eberle is survived
by another son, Bruce of Clarksville, Md.; a daughter, Karen McCarthy of
upstate Newburgh; and four grandchildren. A memorial service on Long Island
will be scheduled sometime in the spring. The family asks that donations
be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of Long Island, 5 Channel Dr., Port
Washington, N.Y. 11050.
*EHLERS- Frederick W., 81, Owned Ridge
Gas Station Frederick W. Ehlers, who owned and operated the Ridge Service
Station for more than half a century, died from stroke complications on Feb.
22 at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson. He was 81. "He
lived a simple life, but was not a simple man," said Ehlers' son, Richard,
also of Ridge. Ehlers had lived in Ridge since birth, and from the age of
16 would run home from school to help pump gas at his father's station, which
opened its door in 1909. The after-school job would grow to become not just
a career, but his life.Ehlers pumped gas for 16 hours a day, seven days a
week for the next 55 years, his family said, taking off only seven days during
the entire time. But in all the years, family members say he seldom questioned
his path in life. "Some people always used to say, 'Fred, why don't you get
out and do this and see that?' But I tell you he found his ultimate happiness
in pumping gas," his son said. Ehlers was well known in the community, having
lived there when it was still a town of only a few hundred. Over the years,
his gas station became more than just a place to fill up your tank, but a
place to stop by and visit an old friend. "People would go out of their way
to stop into the gas station," said Richard, who remembered his father taking
immense joy in the conversations he had with his customers daily. Ehlers'
dedication to his business, which became one of the largest Mobil stations
in the country, was not just about liking his work, his son said. He was
devoted to providing for his son and wife, Helen, whom he met in 1948 while
working at the station. "Whether it was a car for school or paying for
school...he gave you whatever you needed and never asked for anything," Richard
said. "But he never begrudged...He wasn't that way." In 1991, Ehlers finally
retired, leasing the land to Mobil to continue operation of the business.
But even in retirement, Ehlers kept a watchful eye on his beloved home away
from home. Every morning, Ehlers would drive near the station, park atop
a hill and watch over the business, his son said. If employees took too long
attending to a client, Ehlers was the first to blare his horn. In addition
to Helen and Richard, Ehlers is survived by his nephew Buster Ehlers and
niece Kathy Ehlers of Ludlow, Vt. A funeral service was held Feb. 25 at the
O.B. Davis Funeral Home in Miller Place. Interment followed at Cedar Hill
Cemetery in Port Jefferson.

$$FULTON-LEHR Aileen,
78, Former Wantagh Nurse Aileen Fulton Lehr, a former nurse who treated wounded
soldiers during World War II, died on Feb. 16 from heart failure in her home
in Wilmington, Del. The longtime Wantagh resident was 78. "She was a kind
and loving mother," said Lehr's son Gary of Wilmington, who called his mother
a "proud" and "vibrant" woman dedicated to the study of medicine and devoted
to her family. Lehr was born and raised in Cornwall-on-Hudson in upstate
New York, the daughter of Ray Perry Fulton, a telephone company employee,
and Marion O'Neill, a hotel owner. Lehr graduated valedictorian of
Hudson-on-Cornwall High School at age 16 and enrolled in Lenox Hill Hospital
Nursing School in Manhattan, where she earned her degree in 1941 and worked
as a nurse for two years. In 1943, Lehr joined the Army and was stationed
in England during World War II. As a nurse, she tended to wounded soldiers
until being honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of first lieutenant.
After the war, Lehr studied at the University of New Mexico for a year, and
years later returned to school, earning a bachelor's degree in liberal arts
from Adelphi University in 1974. She married Eugene Lehr in 1949 and moved
to Wantagh, where she resided for 41 years. In 1967, she became supervisor
of nursing at Hempstead General Hospital, specializing in the care of the
elderly. When a heart ailment kept her husband from being employed, Lehr
became the sole provider for her family. Back problems forced Lehr to retire
in 1986. She moved to Wilmington in 1990, where she remained active in volunteer
programs assisting the elderly and spent time practicing her other passion,
gardening. In addition to her son, Lehr is survived by another son, Karl
of Nashville, Tenn.; a daughter-in-law, Suzanne Trueblood of Wilmington;
a sister, Marion McDonal of upstate Middletown; a brother, William Fulton
of Cornwall-on-Hudson, and four grandsons. A memorial service was held at
St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Wilmington on Feb. 21. She will be buried alongside

Films London - Character actor Charles Gray, whose chillingly villainous
roles included James Bond's arch-enemy Ernst Blofeld, has died at age 71.
Gray died Tuesday at London's Brompton Hospital, his agents said yesterday.
The cause of death was not announced. A versatile and admired character actor,
Gray excelled as a villain and as a colonial type but also portrayed a range
of sadistic generals and old-school men of property. He appeared in horror
films, television series and most recently was in the TV mini-series "Longitude."
He was best known to international audiences as Blofeld, the villain with
the white cat in his arms, in "Diamonds Are Forever," and as the sibilant
narrator in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." There was no immediate word
of survivors or funeral plans.

$$GRESHIN-Mildred, formerly
an Associate Dean in the Undergraduate Admissions office of the New York
State University at Stony Brook, died on February 29, 2000, at the University
Hospital. She was 70 years old, survived by her husband, three children and
six grandchildren. She was struck down by a cancer that didn't make itself
known until a day after her retirement from work in December 1999. The illness
concluded in less than three months. Mrs. Greshin had a colorful, varied
career. She began as a bilingual secretary to the Military Attache at the
French Embassy in Washington, D.C., upon graduating from Wheaton College,
Mass., in 1951. She met her husband, Ben, in Washington, and came with him
to Smithtown, N.Y. in 1955, where he began a law practice. She supported
him, working as a secretary in the school district. There was a shortage
of school teachers, so soon afteward, she began teaching the second grade.
Her distinctive feature was a warm, ingratiating smile, but underneath there
was a high intelligence and a moral character that is currently in short
supply. During her years as a homemaker, Milly Greshin was busy in a number
of community organizations: president of the Smithtown League of Women Voters,
and delegate to the county and state leagues. In addition, she found time
to organize and chair a cooperative nursery school and more. Summers, she
played tennis and swam; winters, she skied. She taught her sports to her
sons. For the past 20 years, after her children matured, Mrs. Greshin served
in the Undergraduate Admissions office of SUNY at Stony Brook, rising from
a clerical position to Associate Dean. In addition, she served on the Board
of Trustees of the North Suffolk Service Center, an institution for
rehabilitation of persons with drug dependency habits and other ailments.
A Memorial Service will be held at Temple Beth Sholom, Edgewood Avenue,
Smithtown, N.Y., on Saturday, March 4, at 1 PM.

$$JARVIS-Judy, Radio
Talk Host, 54, Former LI Resident Hartford, Conn.-Judy Jarvis, who battled
lung cancer while continuing to host her nationally syndicated radio talk
show, died Tuesday. She was 54. Jarvis had been the host of "The Judy Jarvis
Show" since 1993. The show airs on more than 50 stations nationwide. She
formerly was a reporter for Time Magazine and The Boston Globe. She also
was a frequent contributor to the op-ed pages of newspapers throughout the
nation and appeared as a pundit on CNN, NBC and C-SPAN. Jarvis, the
self-described "feisty, independent-minded broad," had been ill since October,
1998. She found herself with a sharp cough and shortness of breath while
in Seattle to host her show from the National Association of Broadcasters
annual meeting. Upon returning home, Jarvis, a nonsmoker, was diagnosed with
a particularly virulent strain of lung cancer that quickly spread through
her body, and forced the amputation of her left leg. When Jarvis took a medical
break from her Farmington-based show, her son Jason, the show's executive
producer, filled in for his mother on the air. When she returned to the air
early in 1999, Jason stayed on as co-host, making them the only mother-son
team in talk radio. "Everyone that she came into contact with remembered
her, and was touched by her. Everyone," Jason Jarvis said. "She was a
larger-than-life figure. She lived out loud." Jarvis, who grew up in Oceanside,
was a political science graduate from Boston University, a former teacher,
and the president of Jarvis Productions Inc. which syndicated The Judy Jarvis
Show. The radio show made Jarvis a broadcaster of national renown. Talkers,
the industry trade magazine, named Jarvis one of the most influential people
in talk radio for five straight years. Howard Kurtz, the media writer for
The Washington Post, described her as a "radio rebel" in his talk-radio book
"Hot Air." The show, which airs in Connecticut on WTIC-AM in Hartford and
WSTC-AM in Stamford, will continue with Jason as host. Jarvis is survived
by her husband Wal; two sons, Jason and Clayton; several grandchildren; and
her mother Ruth. Funeral arrangements were incomplete yesterday.
$$JOHNSON-Barbara Loss
of a Legislator Barbara Johnson, dies, a key Nassay Democrat Barbara Johnson,
the feisty Nassau County lawmaker who educated others about breast cancer
while enduring her own 14-year struggle against the disease, died yesterday
at her family's apartment in Manhattan. She was 56. Johnson, who lived in
Port Washington for 20 years, was a charter member of the 19-member Nassau
County Legislature, created in 1996. She was re-elected in November to a
third term representing the 11th District, which includes Port Washington,
Manhasset and Roslyn. "Barbara is a dear friend. I think of her as someone
with dignity and grace," said Judy Jacobs (D-Woodbury), the legislature's
presiding officer. The last time Jacobs saw her friend was when Johnson,
suffering from pneumonia, had to be helped by three people from her seat
as she left the legislative chambers following a meeting last month. "Seeing
her leave like that, and it being the last time I would see her, has left
me feeling empty. I will miss her intelligence and compassion," Jacobs said.
In the final days of his mother's life, Craig Johnson said, she continued
to talk about Nassau County politics and the people she represented. "She
was still focusing on the legislature and how troubled she was that they
were not working together," he said. "She made it quite clear that she was
ready to serve full time," he said. " We thought the pneumonia was unrelated
to cancer. But the cancer came back in January. We were all stunned. She
died in her sleep." In interviews with politicians, community leaders and
others who worked with her in the years since she moved from her Mineola
law practice into public service, Johnson was noted for her courage in fighting
breast cancer and for her compassion and generosity in helping others. To
me, she was a real lady," said former legislator Edward Ward of Seaford,
who had received a consoling phone call from Johnson minutes after learning
he had lost his seat in last November's elections. "When she heard that my
parents had died when I was young, she never missed sending me a birthday
present, a Christmas present," Ward said. "Her whole philosophy was to help
people." Claudia Doliner, a civic activist who, along with her husband, Harold,
ran Johnson's legislative campaigns, said, "She was like family. She loved
Port Washington, worked for Port Washington and always did the right thing
for the district." The Doliners recalled how Johnson, a noted environmentalist,
was instrumental in securing funding to clean up Hempstead Harbor and Baxter
Pond in Port Washington. Several times, they added, Johnson recruited doctors
from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center to speak about cancer research
at meetings in her legislative district. As the news of Johnson's death made
its way to members of the legislature, Republicans joined Johnson's Democratic
colleagues in praising a woman they called "an inspiration." "I have lost
a friend, and the citizens of Nassau County have lost a dedicated public
servant," Nassau County Executive Thomas Gulotta said. "Our prayers and deepest
sympathies go out to Barbara's family." Legislative Minority Leader Peter
Schmitt (R-Massapequa), speaking for the nine-member Republican delegation,
said: "Barbara Johnson was a courageous individual, a good friend to many
and a dedicated public official ... We will miss her." It was her courage
in fighting breast cancer that drew the praise of people like North Hempstead
Supervisor May Newberger, who was first elected along with Johnson to the
town board in 1991. "I cannot think of anyone I admire more for their courage,"
Newberger said. "She was a genuine heroine. She never complained or made
any excuses to walk away from a job she undertook." Even as she battled the
disease, Johnson used it to serve the public. As a member of the legislature,
Johnson secured a $2,000 grant for the Manhasset Women's Coalition Against
Breast Cancer, a grassroots group composed of breast cancer survivors. The
money was used to distribute a detailed questionnaire to every household
in Manhasset. The data will be used to map "cluster" areas of breast cancer
incidences. Johnson's identification with breast cancer issues extended to
her politics. In her first campaign, an unsuccessful 1988 race against then-State
Sen. Michael Tully (R-Roslyn Heights), she and an independent film company
charged that she had been cut from a documentary about breast cancer victims
after a Tully aide called the NBC television network and complained that
Tully would be entitled to equal air time under Federal Communications Commission
rules. The Tully campaign said the aide did not exert pressure, but simply
inquired about the show, an explanation that Johnson at the time called
"outrageous." Johnson was also known for her generosity. She and her husband,
Stuart, funded a $3,000 annual scholarship to Nassau Community College for
an adult who always wanted to return to school but never could. Prior to
her election to the legislature, she served on the North Hempstead Town Board
from 1991 to 1995. Johnson was the chairwoman of the Taxi Advisory Committee,
sponsoring several amendments to the town code regulating taxicabs and other
livery vehicles. Johnson graduated from Mineola High School and received
a bachelor of arts degree from New York University and her law degree from
Seton Hall University. She also received a master's of business administration
degree from Pace University. She was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Port
Washington, a former president of the Kiwanis Club of the Willistons, a board
member of the National Jewish Democratic Council and an honorary trustee
of the Chemotherapy Foundation. Johnson had her first experience with Nassau
County government when she served as the municipal liaison to the old Nassau
Board of Supervisors during the tenure of former North Hempstead Supervisor
Ben Zwirn. "She was just driven to be a public servant. It kept her going,"
Zwirn said. Zwirn fondly recalled how fervently Johnson campaigned with him
in his first run for the town board in 1989. "She walked door to door with
me on the hottest days of the summer. I would be exhausted, but she was just
tireless. She wouldn't stop." Johnson is survived by her husband, son and
daughter, Karin, of Manhattan. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday
at the Sunset Chapels in Manhasset. In lieu of flowers, the family requests
that donations be made to the Barbara Johnson Foundation, 29 Deacon Hill
Rd., Port Washington, N.Y. 11050.
$$JOHNSON-Barbara After
less than three months in control, Democrats lost their historic majority
on the Nassau County Legislature yesterday when the death of Barbara Johnson
left a deadlocked legislature at a time when Wall Street is pressing the
county to solve its chronic finanical problems. Under the county charter,
County Executive Thomas Gulotta has no less than 30 days and no more than
60 days from yesterday to call a special election in Johnson's North Shore
legislative district to fill the Port Washington Democrat's seat. Yesterday
Gulotta declined to discuss his plans. "While I recognize that Barbara's
passing will have a significant impact on the dynamics of county government,
it is inappropriate to discuss special elections while Barbara's family and
friends are grieving," he said. Most of Johnson's colleagues were equally
reluctant yesterday to discuss politics and potential candidates in Johnson's
11th District, which includes Manhasset, Sands Point, Roslyn and Port Washington.
Republican county lawmakers and Nassau GOP Chairman Joseph Mondello declined
to comment on the prospect of a special election to break the 9-9 standoff.
However, a tearful Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs (D-Woodbury) said, "First
we mourn, then we go on with life, which is what Barbara would have wanted
us to do. I am sure that she would have wanted the people in her district
to recognize the need for that seat to continue as part of the majority to
enable us to continue in the causes that meant so much to her." Freshman
Legis. David Denenberg (D-Merrick) said, "From a legislative standpoint,
I assume there will be a battle royal for control of the legislature ...
It's a district that the Democrats should win unless we shoot ourselves in
the foot." Legis. Lisanne Altmann (D-Great Neck) publicly voiced what other
political observers were saying privately: "Ben Zwirn is the ultimate wild
card." Port Washington is the hometown of Zwirn, who upset 70 years of Republican
control when he captured the North Hempstead town supervisor's seat in 1989
and then led Democrats to take control of town government two years later.
He disappeared from politics after he stepped down in 1993 to unsuccessfully
challenge Gulotta for county executive and then lost a race as an independent
to win back his supervisor's seat. Political sources say Republicans had
courted Zwirn as a possible candidate during the past few months, but most
insiders doubt Mondello could put up with the maverick politician's tendency
to fight authority. Democratic insiders also point out that Nassau Democratic
Chairman Thomas DiNapoli, who could not be reached for comment yesterday,
has feuded with Zwirn for more than a decade and thus is unlikely to select
him as the Democratic candidate. However, the Independence Party has been
talking to Zwirn, sources said. Zwirn declined to comment, saying, "This
is just a day to think about Barbara and her family. Everything else will
take care of itself." Republicans have a slim edge in registered voters in
the district, but there is also a large block of unaffiliated voters that,
ever since Zwirn's town election, have favored Democratic candidates. Other
potential Democratic candidates include the Nassau party's first vice chairman,
Larry Aaronson, and Jon Brooks, who ran a strong race against State Sen.
Michael Balboni (R-Mineola) two years ago. Only a few Republican names were
thrown out for consideration yesterday, including that of Linda Green, a
former North Hempstead town clerk. Voters' anger over the county's fiscal
problems and wobbly credit led to the Democrats' winning control of the county's
governing body in November for the first time since 1917. Johnson's illness
prevented her from attending most of the meetings this year. She was present
for two critical votes: the choice of Jacobs as presiding officer and approval
of an enhanced 911 fee. Even if a Republican should take the seat, Jacobs
would remain presiding officer under the rules of the legislature, both parties
agree. Jacobs was elected in January to a two-year term, which would not
be affected by a change in the party that holds the majority.

$$LEVI-Edward, Former
U.S. Attorney General, Unoversity President,Chicago - Edward Levi, the U.S.
attorney general who helped rebuild a Justice Department crippled by the
Watergate scandal, died Tuesday after a seven-year battle with Alzheimer's
disease. He was 88. Levi had risen through the ranks to become president
of the University of Chicago when he was tapped as attorney general, serving
from 1975-77. "When I assumed the presidency in August, 1974, it was essential
that a new attorney general be appointed who would restore integrity and
competence to the Department of Justice," former President Gerald Ford told
University of Chicago officials Monday. "Ed Levi, with his outstanding academic
and administrative record at the University of Chicago, was a perfect choice."
Levi had taught at the University of Chicago Law School, becoming dean in
1950. He was named the university's provost in 1962 and served as president
from 1968 to 1975. He was the first Jewish leader of a major university in
the United States, the school said Tuesday. During his time as president,
student protesters in 1975 took over of the school's administration building.
Levi was praised for his evenhanded response to the situation. "Wisdom, wit,
a quiet grace and a tireless willingness to strive for excellence have seldom
been combined in such measure in one individual," U.S. Supreme Court Justice
John Paul Stevens recently said of Levi. Born in Chicago on June 16, 1911,
Edward Levi was the son and grandson of rabbis. He graduated from the University
of Chicago in 1932 and earned his law degree from the school in 1935. During
World War II, he was a special assistant in the U.S. attorney general's office
and returned to Chicago to teach law in 194. In 1949, Levi wrote "An Introduction
to Legal Reasoning," urging legal institutions to develop an internal logic
that is both consistent and adaptable. He was a trustee of at least nine
national foundations and held honorary degrees from 26 colleges and universities.
Funeral services will be private, and arrangements were pending for a memorial
service at the university.

$$MANN-Jack ,74, Former
Sports Editor at Newsday died yesterday. As credentials and seating for the
World Series at Yankee Stadium were being assigned, Jack Mann, the Newsday
sports editor, rose up indignantly. Each New York paper that covered the
Yankees home and road had at least one position in the main pressbox; Newsday
was in the auxiliary box. That was unacceptable, and when Mann found something
unfair or unreasonable he did not take it sitting down. Or quietly. But,
he was told, the auxiliary box is actually a better seat. No, Mann insisted,
his people would be treated with the same professional respect as each of
the other regulars. Mann was a physically small man as well as a good barefoot
outfielder, and he liked to warn people, if they were going to fight him,
they had "better bring lunch." That was in 1960, and he fought Newsday people
into the main press box at Yankee Stadium and every arena to which they were
assigned. He raised the sports pages of Newsday out of the time when the
publicity man of the Dodgers wrote stories from spring training. Mann died
early yesterday morning in Columbia, Md., of cancer at age 74. "I don't know
anybody who made more people angry," said his daughter, Karen Stevenson McClave
of Berkeley, Calif. He was absolutely incorruptible and uncompromising, both
within and without the newspaper, which caused professional and personal
pain. Sometimes he made the wrong people angry, even for the right reasons,
and they fired him. You would not want him arguing your case at a peace rally.
His efforts were acknowledged by Newsweek in 1961 in an item headlined "Kiddie
Corps," for his hiring and nurturing of young and irreverent people, including
columnist Stan Isaacs and newcomers Steve Jacobson and George Vecsey, Joe
Donnelly and Bob Sales. Mann's response, in addition to great pride, was
to say that executive officer Eddie Comerford deserved credit, too. Mann,
as editor, and Comerford grew Newsday sports from an 18-person department
that focused on high schools, midget auto racing and bowling at Falcaro's
to the big leagues, without forgetting the schools. He was fired in the summer
of 1962 after waging one of those bring-lunch battles over what he was convinced
was composing-room sabotage. He wrote a letter charging that a top editor
had "no stomach" to deal with the matter and wouldn't let Comerford talk
him out of writing the letter. When several members of the Kiddie Corps offered
to stop work in support of him, Mann advised standing by Comerford. "He was
the most talented guy of his time here," Comerford said. "I learned from
him; he didn't learn from me." On an early Mets trip after a brawl in San
Francisco, he wrote: "The Mets can't fight either..." He wrote: "The long
lonely road to the shower is bleached white with the bones of pitchers who
thought Joe DiMaggio had ice water in his veins, but not even the Yankee
Clipper could turn his back yesterday on a weeping Marilyn Monroe." He waited
years to assign somebody to write about the fans with stopwatches at a Garden
track meet so he could use the head: "These Are the Souls Who Time Men's
Tries." Mann graduated from Huntington High School in 1942, joined the Marine
Corps at 17 and served in the Pacific Theater: "37 months, two days, four
hours and 17 minutes, but who's counting?" He attended Columbia University
for one year before becoming a reporter and columnist at the Babylon Leader.
He made himself a scholar in the classics and Shakespeare. He would duel
references with Branch Rickey, the scholar of baseball. Mann covered the
Dodgers opening at the Coliseum in 1958 and asked to take early batting practice.
Manager Walter Alston approved but concluded it would not serve well to have
this 33-year-old newsman hit the ball over the nearby fence. The Associated
Press doesn't use the term "new record" anymore because sharp-pencil Mann
pointed out "a record is a new record, or it wouldn't be a record." He was
challenged at one point by one of his contemporaries with this question:
The end of the world is coming tomorrow and you have 11 counts for a headline.
What do you write? He paused for a moment and scribbled, "We've Had It."
After Newsday he worked at the Detroit Free Press, the New York Herald Tribune
and Sports Illustrated, where a brief, fiery term included a brilliant profile
of Bill Bradley at Oxford. He wrote "Decline and Fall of the New York Yankees,"
worked for The Miami Herald, the Washington Daily News and Washington Star,
and at the Baltimore Evening Sun until mandatory retirement at age 65. He
was fired or quit at most of the other places because he wouldn't compromise
principles. He won Eclipse Awards for stories about racing in 1987 and 1993.
His marriages to Edith Stevenson and Judith Luce ended in divorce. In addition
to his daughter, Karen McClave, he is survived by another daughter, Katherine
of McLean, Va.; sons Steven of Richmond, Va., David of New York, Donald of
Ashland, Ore., and Jeffrey of Santa Cruz, Calif.; stepson Devin Mann of Los
Angeles; a brother, Alan Mann of West Babylon; and five grandchildren. He
is to be buried Tuesday - barefoot and in khakis and a treasured T-shirt
- at Long Island National Cemetery. He had one more headline he was saving
for the right moment. It was about the bankrupt bus company that went out
of business. He wanted to write: "Sic Transit Sick Transit." He never got
to use it.

at Bobby Gore's Dance Studio in Jamaica. When her family moved to Amityville,
Smith began training to be a teacher at the Arthur Murray Studio in Bay Shore.
She was paired with a dance teacher at the studio named John Smith, in January,
1954. Six months later, they were married. They bought a house in Bay Shore,
where they later raised five children. In 1960, after several years of teaching
together, the couple bought the Arthur Murray Studio. While running the studio,
the Smiths also competed in ballroom competitions internationally during
the 1960s and 1970s. For several years, they traveled back and forth to London,
where they studied with the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance. They also
oversaw several Arthur Murray Dance Studios on Long Island and in other states.
They helped three of their sons open and operate Arthur Murray Studios in
Port Jefferson, Southampton, Huntington and New Orleans. When she wasn't
dancing, Smith took great pride in her garden. There she grew flowers and
vegetables and even had a greenhouse room off her house. At Smith's funeral
on March 3 at St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church in Bay Shore, more than
500 people attended, many of them former students and members of the community.
"We've touched a lot of people's lives," John Smith said. "She used to say
"I teach people fun.' Dancing is to enjoy an art. She loved it." In addition

Orleans, George D. Smith of Setauket, Gary Smith of East Moriches, Joseph
Smith of West Babylon and Kathryn DeNigris of Mastic Beach; and nine
grandchildren.

$$SUOZZI-Joseph , 46,
Banker By all accounts, Joseph Suozzi was consistent. In high school, when
he took the mound in Glen Cove's Campanella Baseball League, his first pitch
was always a strike. By all accounts, Joseph Suozzi was always willing to
help. When the son of a friend from Japan needed his help while living in
the United States, Suozzi came to his rescue. And by all accounts, Joseph
Suozzi lived an ideal life. He had traveled the world, had called three
continents home, and had a loving and supportive wife, daughter and son.
On the rare occasion when Suozzi found a moment to himself at the home he
kept on Glen Cove's West Island, he occasionally would go down to the water,
slip his tiny Sailfish into the water, and sit in Hempstead Harbor smoking
a cigar and soaking it all in. On Feb. 25, Suozzi died at his London home
from a heart attack. He was 46. "This can't be," Suozzi's 12-year-old son,
Patrick, said to his aunt, Rosemary Lloyd, yesterday. "We had so much left
to do still." Born in 1954, Suozzi was the oldest son of Joseph and Marguerite
Suozzi. He attended St. Patrick's Elementary School in Glen Cove and Chaminade
High School in Mineola. He graduated cum laude from Boston College and entered
Northeastern, where he earned his master's degree in accounting. He later
earned his law degree from St. John's Law School. In addition to being an
attorney, Suozzi also became a CPA, working in tax accounting for Arthur
Young & Co. in Manhattan before moving to the mergers and acquisitions
department at Morgan Stanley in Manhattan in 1986. He later established and
managed the firm's Tokyo and Hong Kong Individual Investor Services Departments.
Suozzi joined Credit Suisse First Boston as chief operating officer in Tokyo
in 1990. He transferred to that firm's London office in 1992, and in 1997,
he joined Deutsche Bank in London as deputy chief operating officer. But
wherever he was working, he kept in touch with his family in Glen Cove. "I
got a fax from him last week. He was trying to give me advice long distance
on my career," said his brother, Glen Cove Mayor Thomas Suozzi. "I guess
I didn't do what he wanted right away, because he sent me another one a couple
of days later. It said, 'Hello, is anybody home?'" In fact, Suozzi had long
been dispensing advice and providing a sympathetic ear for anyone who needed
help. "The outpouring of support from his colleagues and co-workers has been
amazing," said Lloyd, his sister. "We're learning how much he was loved by
everyone he came in contact with." A wake is scheduled for tomorrow and Sunday
from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the McLaughlin Kramer Megiel Funeral
Home at 220 Glen St. in Glen Cove, and a funeral mass will be celebrated
at St. Patrick's Church in Glen Cove at 10 a.m Monday. Longtime friends from
his baseball- playing days will stand shoulder- to-shoulder with those who
have only known him for a few years, Lloyd said. The young Japanese man whom
Suozzi helped when he was having trouble in college has called to ask whether
he could come, and one co-worker from London has called to say he already
had decided to name his first born son after the man whom had only known
for a year. "Everyone loved him," Mayor Suozzi said. "Everyone. He was consistent
about that, too." In addition to his parents, brother, sister and son, Suozzi
is also survived by his wife, Maria Suozzi; daughter, Maggie, 16; and two
other brothers, William Suozzi of Glen Rock, N.J., and Christopher Suozzi
of Upper Brookville.
