One of the notable features of the Old Department was the number of
social organizations which sprang from it. The men were not merely
satisfied with being banded together for the protection of life and
property from fire, but desired to form clubs and societies outside of the
jurisdiction of the department. These organizations took the form of
target companies, chowder clubs, and so on. The idea was to perpetuate the
good fellowship which arose in the engine house. The associations gave
opportunity for agreeable relaxation after the arduous duties of the
department had been attended to, and the excursions and parties were
participated in by friends of the members. They are by no means an
insignificant part of the social history of the people of New York, and
therefore should have some notice in a work of this kind. Below is a
pretty full list of these clubs, with the name of the captain or leader
who has been identified with them. Engine Company No. 33 (Black Joke), be
it noted, has the honor of having been the first company to inaugurate a
target excursion:
