On the eleventh of March, 1877, at No. 24 Ludlow Street, when the
bursting of a kerosene lamp caused a fire that spread from the
second floor. The inhabitants were panic stricken, but by ladders
and from the roofs of adjoining houses, the officers and firemen
named took out Abraham Lavin, a child who was dead, and rescued
David Lavin, aged six, Hattie Manson, Frank aged three, Mark Frank,
aged three, Annie Weisburg, aged eight, Rosanna Weisburg, aged
thirty, and Herman Frank, aged five. |

On the thirty-first of March, 1877, at No. 20 North William
Street, learned that Julius Frank and Elizabeth Stevens, were
perishing in the sub-basement. Dougherty , with an axe, descended,
and cutting down two doors, found them unconscious in dense smoke.
He carried them under the front stoop and passed them to members of
his company, having to raise each person about eight feet. Only his
great endurance and strength enabled him to withstand the heat and
smoke, and raise and pass out the sufferers. |

On the twenty-eighth of August, 1877, at No. 188 Eldridge Street,
braved heat and smoke, and after three attempts, rescued Lena
Zeigler, a child, from a bedroom on the third floor, when she was
almost suffocated. |

At the Peak theater, on the twenty-fourth of October, 1877, so
quickly extinguished canvas scenery that had been fired by a gas
bracket, as to prevent a panic and frightful loss of life. The
terror of the audience was allayed, and the fireman was loudly
applauded. |

On the fourteenth of December, 1877, at No. 112 Chatham Street,
found Charles Roeder and Louis Stanboeck, partly insensible on the
third floor. Carrying one and followed by the other he took them to
the first floor, when they recovered and were able to go to the
street unaided. |

On the seventh of January, 1878, at the New York Dental College,
saved the life of Mrs. James Gracie, of no. 200 East Fortieth
Street, by extinguishing a fire on her dress, which was caused by an
alcohol land falling on her. |

At No. 132 West Broadway, found sixteen persons calling for help
at the windows, they being unable to escape by the stairs. Calming
them and raising ladders, they, with other members of the company,
rescued James A. hart, his wife, and three children; Thomas Kent,
his wife and child; Michael Shiels, W. C. Wilkins, a man whose name
was not ascertained, two brothers named Laing, P/. Smith, F. Zebro,
and Charles Hoff. |

rescued Sarah Goldberg, her children David, Mary, and Solomon, and
Jacob, Samuel, Abraham, and Mary Leszinsky, children. |

On the second of May, 1878, at No. 28 East Fourteenth Street,
acted promptly on seeing Mrs. Sarah Freeman hanging out of a fourth
story window. A ladder raised ws found to be too short, although
held by hooks and stood on the stoop. Ordering he ladder to be
raised quite erect, and away from the building, Meagher went up,
stood on the top rung, told her to be calm and hold her limbs rigid,
and then to drop. As she fell he caught her, and passed her safely

At No 190 Sixth Avenue, on the tenth of April, 1879, before
ladders arrived climbed up the front of the building, and found,
partly suffocated by intensely hot smoke, Marie Oxley and her
children, Marie, John, and Alice, and rescued them. |

rescued from fire and suffocation Mrs. E. X. Monstery, Miss M.

On the twenty-third of April, 1879, at No. 52 Prince Street,
prevented Josephine Lash, aged sixteen from jumping to the yard from
the second floor, and going up-stairs, carried her to an adjoining
house. |

On the twenty-fourth of May, 1879, at No. 221 West Forty-third
Street, was unable to go up-stairs to the rescue of a number of
persons imprisoned on the third floor because of the heat and smoke.
But a painter's scaffold was in front of the house, and, drawing
himself up to it from the stoops of a house next door, he rescued
Miss Nellie Fitzgerald, Miss Belle Shaffer, William Hammond, Emil
Sultan, and Alexander Bofil. |

At No. 528 Broome Street, on the fourteenth of July, 1879, found
Maria Brine, and her children Edward and Carrie, asking for help
from a window of the third floor. McDonald went up a ladder, calmed
them and took them to the street by the stairs. |
