In a sketch necessarily so incomplete, the writer can only give but
brief notices of a few of the many well-known insurance men of this city,
who, by their energy and experience, have earned a national reputation,
and built up the present admirable system, by which they have made their
names honorable household words. As many leading insurance officials have
been prominently unidentified with the Fire Department at some period of
their lives (mostly with the Volunteer), sketches and portraits of quite a
number of them will be found among the biographies of old firemen. It is
not always an easy matter to discriminate who shall appear upon the list
where all are, in a sense, equally deserving. "Some are born great,
while others have greatness thrust upon them."
