Benjamin SHELDON, of the town of Clinton county of Dutchess & state of New York, son of Jonathan SHELDON & Eliza Ann his wife, & Sarah POWELL daughter of Jacob POWELL & Martha his wife, of the town, county & state aforesaid, deceased, having laid their intentions of marriage with each other, before two Monthly Meetings of the Religious society of Friends, held at Crum Elbow & Creek in the state aforesaid, they having consent of surviving Parents & nothing appearing to obstruct, their proposal of marriage was allow'd by the meeting. These are to certify that for the accomplishment of their intentions this twenty seventh day of the eleventh month, in the year of our Lord, one thousand, eight hundred & seventeen they the said Benjamin SHELDON, & Sarah POWELL, appeared in a public meeting of said society, held at Crum Elbow, & the said Benjamin SHELDON taking the said Sarah POWELL by the hand, did on this solemn occasion, declare that he took her to be his wife, promising, through Divide assistance, to be unto her a faithful & loving husband, until separated by death, or words to that effect. And then the said Sarah POWELL did in like manner declare, that she took the said Benjamin SHELDON to be her husband, promising, thro Divine assistance to be unto him a faithful & loving wife, until separated by death, or words to that import. And they, the said Benjamin SHELDON, & Sarah POWELL, she according tot he custom of marriage, assuming the name of her Husband, as a further confirmation thereof, did then & there, to these presents, set their hands.
