Christmas Open House
Almond--The Almond Historical Society's annual Christmas Open House is set for Sunday afternoon, December 6, and will feature tours of the beautifully decorated Hagadorn House and a program of Christmas music.
The 1830's Hagadorn House at 7 Main Street will be open to the public from 1-5pm, and will be decorated in this year's theme, "The Twelve Days of Christmas" by Mary Ellen Westlake. Hot wassail and cookies made by Mary Jane Reid will be served by Anna
Morford, Helen Spencer, Velma Sherman and Kitty Baker.
At 2pm, a musical program will be held at Almond Union Church, adjacent tot he Hagadorn House. A 25-voice children's choir, conducted by Randi Corkey and accompanied by Donna Ryan, will present several numbers, as well as a girls' ensemble. Also
performing will be a barbershop quartet and a mixed group, "Pilgrim's Hope" under the direction of Kelly Perkins.
Traditionally, a large Christmas tree is donated by Ron and Lucille George for the front parlor, and decorations are created by area home-schoolers under the direction of Susan Steere and Dottie Snyder.
The Almond Historical Society was chartered by the State of NY in 1965, and the late Ken Hagadorn willed his home to the Society in the early 1970's. The parlor is furnished with Victorian furniture from the estate of Helene Phelan, one of the charter
members of the Almond Historical Society who also wrote several books of local interest. Ken Hagadorn's desk from the Post Office, where he served as postmaster and rural mail carrier for many years, is also in the front parlor. Other items on display include pieces from the McHenry
family, as well as the typewriter on which John Reynolds typed his book, "The Almond Story."
Throughout the year, the Hagadorn House is open from 2-4pm on Friday afternoons, at which time Kitty Baker and Doris Montgomery are at work in the archives room. Special tours may be arranged by calling Lee Ryan, President, at 607-276-6760.
