The many friends of Mrs. Wright Devine were sorry to her of her death which occurred at her home in this village on Thursday evening following a stroke of paralysis. Mrs. Devine was the daughter of John Lattin, a well known citizen of this town for many years. It will be remembered that twenty-three years ago he lost his life while crossing the Central New England Railroad tracks north of this village. Her first husband was Edward S. Hicks, who died some years ago. She later married Wright Devine, who survives her, together with two step-children, S. W. Devine of Poughkeepsie, and Mrs. Everitt VanAmburgh of this village. Active in every good work and always ready to lend of her means and talents, Mrs. Devine was generally beloved both in this community and in other places where her good deeds extended. |
For many years she has been a faithful member of the Presbyterian Church, active in its affairs and contributing largely to its support. At the time of her death she was an active member of Fidelity Lodge of Good Templars and held the office of Superintendent of Juvenile Work. She died as she lived, a consistent Christian woman and her good works do follow her. She was in the 72nd year of her age and had lived the greater part of her life here. Her funeral will be held this (Sunday) afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Presbyterian Church of this village. The services will be conducted by the Rev. Edgar Beckwith for 12 years pastor of the church here, but now of Chicago, Ill.; assisted by Rev. R. H Stearns.

Pleasant Valley and vicinity was shocked to hear of the death of Mrs. Wright Devine, who passed away on the evening of April17th. Mrs. Devine was the daughter of John W. Lattin, a well known citizen and a Supervisor of the town in the sixties during the Civil War. She first married Edward S. Hicks, who died about fourteen years ago, and later married Mr. Devine, the well known merchant in that town. Mrs. Devine was a woman of quite a large income and believed in using it for the happiness of others, which seemed to give her greater enjoyment than if used for her personal pleasures. Her generous hand has added to the comfort of many, both at home and abroad and none were turned away without aid and comfort. |
Her last gifts with many others included three thousand dollars to the Presbyterian Church, and five hundred dollars to the cemetery of her own village and also two thousand dollars to the Old Ladies' Home and five hundred dollars to the Home for the Friendless in Poughkeepsie. The funeral was held on Sunday last from her late residence and the Presbyterian Church, which was crowded to the door. Rev. E. Beckwith, of Maywood, Ill., and R. H. Stearns, of her home church officiated. She has gone to her reward and all who knew her feel the loss theirs, not hers.
