David Johnson Stearns
Eliphalet Stearns was of English descent, and was a captain in the American forces during the Revolution. His son Elijah, a native of Massachusetts, served with him, acting at first as his servant, but being afterward promoted to a lieutenancy, in which capacity he rendered zealous service in the cause of liberty. After his discharge at the close of the war, he located at Dover, Vermont, where in the year 1793 David Johnson Stearns, the subject of our sketch, was born; he being the second of eleven children.
In 1815 David J. Stearns immigrated to Ohio, and settled on "Butternut Ridge," in Kingston, now Olmstead, where he bought a tract of land, and cut the first tree, for the purpose of improvement, that was felled on the ridge. In February, 1819, he was married to Polly Barnum, of Fernsburg, Vermont, by whom he had eight children.
Mr. Stearns was elected town clerk in 1823, and held the
office for seven years without remuneration. In 1831 he was
elected township trustee, serving two years, and he also acted
as assessor one year. Politically he has always been a Democrat.
In religion he is a Universalist, having been a member of that
church sixteen years. Mr. Stearns remains a fair representative
of pioneer days, contented to have been a successful farmer,
free from ostentation, and devoted to the best interests of the
people around him. Being in fair health and good spirits, he
enjoys life even in his old age, and the burden of his eighty-six
years, rests very lightly upon him.
