Biography of

James COLEMAN

Copyright 2000 Patrick Burke

I am researching ancestors and descendants of James COLEMAN (or COLMAN, COALMAN), born ca. 1771 in or near Trenton, New Jersey, son of John COLEMAN and Catherine ______. James' wife was Amy FOSTER, born 24 May 1782 in Pennsylvania, perhaps the daughter of Benjamin FOSTER and Jonna/Joanna _______. James and Amy were married 25 Dec 1787 on the Ohio River between OH and WV. They evidently lived in several locations following their marriage based on birth, census or land records: (1) In 1799 they were evidently living in Brooke Co., VA (now WV); (2) In ca. 1807 and in 1817 they were in Warren or Wells Twp., Jefferson Co., OH; (3) In 1820 they may have been in Clarke Twp., Clinton Co., OH; (4) in 1827 they were in Guernsey Co., OH; Amy (Foster) COLEMAN died 4 Sep 1829 and is buried in Antrim, Guernsey Co., OH; (5) James was in Washington Twp., Guernsey Co., OH in 1830. James COLEMAN (c.1771) died 1849 in Cedar Co., IA. James and Amy (Foster) COLEMAN had ten known children (dates for only two known): Andrew (b. 1799 WV-1881 IA); John (b. 1804/05 OH-1863 IA); Joanna; Catherine; Elizabeth; Hester; Margaret; James; Foster; Charles. Their son John COLEMAN (b. 1804/05 OH), my direct ancestor, married Mary COOPER (1804 MD-1866 IA) about 1825. Several of John and Mary's children were born in Guernsey Co., OH between 1826 and 1836. In 1837 John and Mary moved to Rockingham (near Davenport), Scott Co., IA. The 1840 census record for Scott Co., IA suggests John's brothers Charles and Foster COLEMAN were also living in Scott Co. in 1840. Andrew COLEMAN (b. 1799 WV) died in Mahaska Co., IA in 1881. He is reported to have been married six times. Any help with this family, particularly the ancestors of James COLEMAN (c.1771) and Amy FOSTER (c.1782) would be much appreciated. I'd be happy to provide additional information on these families if I can.
