The Guernsey County Genealogical Society Presents:

Northwood Cemetery Interment Records

After seven years of concentrated effort, the interment records from Cambridge’s Northwood Cemetery are finally available to the public in book form. Published under the auspices of the Guernsey County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society as an Ohio Bicentennial project, the three-volume set details the interments of 21,568 persons from 1898 to June 2002 and includes the few records available on Founders and Old City Cemeteries.

Joy Erskine, GCCOGS vice president, has been personally involved with this project since its inception, when she contacted cemetery supervisor Fred Huff and offered to create a computer database of Northwood Cemetery’s record books. “Through the years as I’ve worked on the database from which these volumes are derived, I came to a better understanding of the value of the resources at my fingertips and it occurred to me that Cambridge city offices, cemetery staff, and historians and genealogists throughout the area would all benefit if these records were publicly available,” she noted. City officials agreed, and publication began as soon as the database was completed. “It’s been a long process, and a great deal of work, but the end result is definitely worth the effort,” Mrs. Erskine added.

Volume One has 642 pages of interment information; Volume Two has 669 pages; and Volume Three has 681 pages. Recorded information includes the interment number assigned at the cemetery; name of the deceased; place of residence; death date; age; sex; cause of death; date of interment; cemetery section, lot, and location; fees; funeral home; type of vault; number of cemetery lots the family owned; and remarks such as birth date, spouse’s name, other family members, military information, or other names used; although not all entries have notations in each category.

The books may be purchased at the Guernsey County Genealogical Society at 125 N. 7th Street in Cambridge. The Society is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00-4:00 p.m. and Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Books may also be ordered by telephone at 740-432-9249, via e-mail at, or by U.S. mail at P.O.
