Hello. I recently received some military records for my Great Uncle Homer Yankie. I requested the records in hopes of gaining information about the parents of Uncle Homer. His older brother, J.T. Yankie, is my grandfather and we (family) have not been able to learn anything about J.T. or Homer's parents. J.T. is listed as "next of kin" on Homer's military papers. The papers state that Homer Yankie was born in Highland County, Ohio in 1874. Homer joined the army in April 1895. Occupation "farmer." We are pretty sure J.T. and Homer's mother was Mahala Jane Yankey. A bible entry listed that Mahala Jane Yankey married Jacob Yankie. (???? what????). A family rumor may be true. Another rumor says that a femaleYankie married someone with the last name of "Love" and Mr. Love changed his name to Yankie.
Great Uncle Homer was a long-time military man. He reinlisted several times and apparently was retired after 18 years. He died in 1946 and is buried at the National Cemetery in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was an infantryman and also in the Mounted Service. Family lore has him riding with Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders. My brother has a framed document that gave Homer clearance to deliver US military payroll in Cuba. He was apparently shot at several times and lost his mount in one battle.
But to get back to my quest.... to get any information about the parents of Homer and his brother J.T. -- this is either John/ or Jay Trimble Yankie. We don't even know for sure what our grandfather's name was!! Another family story was that J.T. and Homer's father was killed in a sawmill accident - but that may have been in Illinois. My brother, Jerry Yankie, has been the one who has perked my interest but we have so many unanswered questions.

I need information about the marriage of Peter R. Gravatt and Rachel (Purneo/Puneo) in Highland Co. in 1840. Some of my records show Rachel's name as Pummel, although I am sure that is not correct. My great grandfather's name was Henry Puneo Gravatt, so I do believe his middle name was from his mother. Both Peter and Rachel to my knowledge are buried somewhere between Montgomery Co. and Highland Co. at a cemetery call Woodland. Any help you can give me would be appreciated. pat_ortli@yahoo.com

Re: HENDRICKSON, John F. My ancestor, John F. Hendrickson, died in Highland County, Ohio in August of 1823. He was a farmer and landowner in Indiana's Rush, Fayette, and Franklin Counties, and in Lewis County, Kentucky. It is not known why he was in Highland County in 1823, but he was a young man only about 28 at the time of his death so he could have been there for business purposes -- perhaps to buy livestock or on some other errand. He left three children -- John Boyd Hendrickson, Sarah Edna Hendrickson, and William Firman Hendrickson -- the last one as yet unborn. His widow was Nancy Wilson Hendrickson, also of Lewis County, Kentucky. The children were all born in Lewis County, Kentucky. Are there any old records that might mention the untimely, and perhaps accidental, death of this man? His heirs were wrangling over his estate as late as 1840, which is where the information about his place of death comes from (Indiana's Rush County Probate Book #2, 1836-1841). There is no evidence he owned land in Highland County, at least so far as I have been able to determine. I would appreciate any insight or thoughts. Nancy Shire

My name is Julie Monson and I have been researching the Samuel Beard family from Hillsboro, Highland, OH. Samuel and his wife Barbara E. (?) and two of their children died of cholera between 10-18 Oct. 1866. I got this information from the Highland Weekly News, Thursday, Oct. 18, 1866 which I viewed on microfilm on loan from the OHS. Samuel is my maternal 3 gr. grandfather. I also have Baldwin and Bisher (Bishir) relatives from Highland County. Is there any interest in posting this kind of information, and if so, how do I do it? I am currently trying to obtain whatever vital records I can from the Highland Co. Probate Court. Thanks in advance for your help. Julie Monson jamstamper@aol.com

I am looking for information on my ggg grandfather, William L. OVERMAN b. abt 1835 in Highland Co., Ohio. He is on the 1850 census for Wapsinonock Twp in Iowa as living with Samuel and Susanna FLETCHER. Susanna OVERMAN and Samuel FLETCHER were married in 1846 in Muscatine Co., Iowa. Susanna was born around 1827 in Ohio also. I am assuming since William was living with Susanna and her husband, that William was Susanna's brother, or perhaps close cousin? There was another child living with them also, a James KENNEDY, age 11, b. Ohio. So for some reason all of these young people came west together. William L. OVERMAN married Mary Francis OHEARN on Oct 11, 1857 in Muscatine Co., Iowa. They had one child, Henry Victor, in 1858. William enlisted for the civil war in 1862, and died in 1863 of disease in Cairo, Illinois, just before his regiment went into battle. I would appreciate any information, as I have been at a dead end with William for a very long time. Thank you.
