Created in 1892 from Original County (Cheyenne, Arapho Lands). Was originally designated as County "D" at the time of the opening of the Cherokee - Arapaho Reservation in 1892 and continued to be known as County "D" until the general election of 1899 when the people of the county voted that the "D" stood for Dewey through all these years.
