ALLMON CEMETERY AREA Reportedly in the mid twenties there were at least three grave mounds on a knoll east of the current cemetery. The knoll no longer looks the same as it did to a small boy and his playmate. At the time the mounds of dirt were very visible and stirred the imagination of the youngsters, especially since there was a cemetery nearby.

The graves of one woman and her infant; several workers, including 5 Mexican workers who died in 1918 from the flu epidemic. All were buried near the railroad line located near Old Tousalin Switch.
Fred MEYER was the timekeeper at Camp Tousalin where about 100 Mexicans were employed when building the Highline portion of the Sante Fe Railroad upon which the "Doodlbug" traveled from Shattuck to Spearman, TX.
The Earnest Ray DANEILS family lived in tents and later in the section house. J. BROSH also lived near the camp. He had learned to speak enough Spanish that he helped Dr. GREEN communicate with the camp during the sickness.

This location is on Department of Wildlife Land. There is no road access.
The location of this grave is on a small knoll, approsimately 100 feet southeast of an old dougout location. This grave is of an infant or small child. An area about 4 ft. square is enclosed by an old iron bed frame. In 1996, the initials "T. S." were visible.
In 1910, the land owners were shown to be George M. SMITH and Sarah SMITH with the residence on the line between the two properties. Other land owners to the west of the known creek bed were Edson MEAD and James L. ALCORN.
It is believed that due to the location of the grave, the graved belonged to a member of the SMITH family.

This grave is now located on the property of the Department of Wildlive. There is no road access.
This grave is near a large white rock, in the area of what is knowns as "Ant Hill."
Land owners of Section 18 in 1910 were: Andrew W. ALCORN, Alvin EWART, Lewis ALVERSON and Normal School.
This is an unknown person buried in this site.

LESLIE, Harry (alias) William C. LATTA
Harry LESLIE, a local bartender, was killed in front of the saloon at Grand. He was not considered worthy of being buried in the Grand (Riverside) Cemetery so they buried him on a hill above the courthouse. His son later had the grave fenced.
A proper headstone has been placed. However, it bears only the name Harry LESLIE since the gentlemen who bought the headstone were unaware of the alias.
In 1993, probate records were discovered at the Ellis County Court House to prove that the man known as Harry LESLIE was William C. LATTA.

A newspaper account records that Ira COOPER was shot and killed by Harry J. HAMILTON. The murder trial ended in Enid, OK. Mr. HAMILTON supposedly went to Kansas, never to return again. After being pardoned, he was possibly killed in Old Mexico by Mr. COOPERS brother. It is reported that Mr. COOPERS brother returned home after a 3 year journey and said: "The jobs done."

There were two murders being tried at Grand about Sept. 1, 1899.
One was of MURCHISON who allegedly shot Bob LOW -- Ioland. The other was of a Mr. HALE from the EWING ranch who allegedly shot a New Mexico cowboy. MURCHISON was found guilty. Mr. HALE's case was found to be self-defense. --------------------------------------------------------------

HALBERT victom of small pox epidemic. The entire family had small pox.
The grave site is protected by a regulation iron railing. This railing is a commercial type fencing. Reportedly this type fencing was used to mark grave sites of disease. Small pox is one disease that never dies. In the early days anyone who traveled by would know what this grave site meant.
The HALBERT child was buried and the family cedar log home was burned along with all the belongings to try and stop the disease. A new board home structure was built across the road. Reportedly the government was in charge of the burial, burning and rebuilding of the new three room structure.
Frank MOORE was born in the new home and currently owns the land where the grave is located.

NEGRO RESIDENTS AND HOMESTEADERS

Located on one end of Horseshoe Hill. Unaccesible. Mr. Ike WATKINS was a Negro Veteran of the Civil War. He homesteaded in the Ioland area. He lies on a hil on the land he homesteaded, north of the Ioland Cemetery.
The grave location is reportedly marked. It is also noted that he possibly died of a gunshot wound. --------------------------------------------------------------
NEGRO FAMILY
GAGE AREA
A former resident of Ellis County stated in 1995 that in the area of "N----r Hill", two miles east of Gage there were two grandparents, two parents and one child buried near an old dugout. Apparently the grandparent was a homesteader at this location. Identity unknown at this time.

This is also the area of another incident that has been told by another source. Reportedly the parent of the family chained one of the children to a tree for discipline. The neighbors discoverd this and turned him in to the local law.

There was a daughter who reportedly left by train to make her way in the world. One report was that she left and married a railroad worker. It was reported that she returned a few years later for a short visit.

Mr. Frank R. DELANY(DELANBY) is listed on the 1910 census as being a resident of Greenwood Township. His age was listed as 72. He was also a Negro Veteran of the Civil War. He reportedly made a statement at Grand about this country being a fine place to settle. It is not known at this time if he died in Ellis County or not.

Approximately 13 miles south of Shattuck there was a black man my the name of COOPER who homesteaded. He left the county due to difficulties in the neighborhood.

NEGRO GRAVESITE

ON BOGGY CREEK
John "Grandpa" NORMAN shared the following story with many over the years, including his son Cecil, who passed the story on to his son Jack. Jack wishes to have this grave site documented.
"Between 1899 - 1901, a cowboy passing thru the country stopped at the John NORMN farm for water. The cowboy asked Grandpa NORMN if that 'N----r buried over there on the hill ever bothered him.' Grandpa NORMN said he "reconed not, why?"
"The cowboy recounted that he came thru there a number of years ago on a cattle drive and that they had a 'N----r' cook on the chuck wagon. It was summer time, a thunderstorm came up, lighting struck and killed the cook. We just buried him right there, boots and all."
