Biography of Mary Beed Clark
Mary Sarah Ann Reed (Clark) was the only daughter born to Thomas and Ann Reed, on 17 January, 1841. She had 9 brothers and lived at Honiton, Devonshire England. In 1855, she migrated to the United States along with her parents. The entire family settled in the Hampton, Iowa area.
In 1863, age 22, she married Stephen Ellis Clark and lived on a
farm in the Marshalltown, Iowa area, until 1884. They had 2 children, Charles and Annie.
They relocated, in 1887, to Kalamazoo County, Michigan and
purchased 120 acres near Augusta, remaining there until 1894, when they sold their land.
May 1906, Mary and Ellis, traveled to Gage, Ellis County, Oklahoma to homestead property adjacent to their son-in-law, William Gonter's land. The kind was located in Sections 27 and 28, with Township Range of 21-N, 23-W.
While homesteading, Mary wrote a series of letters to her son, Charles and his family in which she described their surroundings, daily activities, the planting and harvesting of crops (also failures!!), various types of vegetation and animals, as well as their church, community and school events.
They remained on their homestead the required length of time, returning to Michigan in June 1907. Annie, husband, William Gonter and their daughter Ruth, remained in the Gage area for an unknown length of time.
