Graveside services for Carl Athens 87 year old former Shattuck resident, were held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, October 31 at the Brickford Cemetery near Catesby. The Reverend Kenny Platte officiated. Services were under the direction of Johnson's Good Samaritan Funeral Service of Shattuck.
Carl Joseph Athens was born August 28, 1916 at Enid, to Joseph and Agnes (Richards) Athens. He grew up in various places including, Enid, Shattuck, and Catesby, where he attended school. Carl then moved to Wichita, Kan., where he worked as a messenger for Western Union. In 1936, he married Thelma Jenkins at Wichita, where they made their home. In 1944, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. At the wars end, he returned to Wichita where he worded for the Railway Express Company for several years. Carl then became employed as a shipping agent for Kansas Paint and Color, retiring in 1978.
On September 16, 1989, he married his childhood sweetheart Edith Mae (Baker) Shepherd at Shattuck, where they made their home.
Carl was a member of the Fellowship Bible Church in Tulsa and a past member of the Methodist Church in Shattuck. He was a member of the Masonic Joppa Lodge, #262 in Shattuck, and was an active member of the Shattuck Senior Citizens Center. Carl loved to travel, sing, play his harmonica and would become a part of a musical group wherever he went. Carl was an outgoing, caring person who never met a stranger. Mr. Athens died October 28, 2003 at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, at the age of 87 years, and two months.
He was preceded in death by his wife Edith, in 1995, two brothers, and a sister.
Carl is survived by a son and his wife, Dean and Connie Athens, of Bixby, four grandchildren, Dena Peterson, Arthur Athens, Rebecca Nichols, and Brad Athens,; five great-grandchildren; a step-son and his wife Don and Bonnie Shepherd, of Shattuck; a step-daughter and her husband, Lyndell and Marion Howell, of Alva; six-step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; two step-great-great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
