Marie (Fiel) Deal

Marie Fiel Deal, 91, of Shattuck passed form this life Saturday, January 11, 2003 at Newman Memorial Hospital. Memorial services were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church with Revered Gene Land, pastor of St. Paul Congregational Church and Jerry Huggins, minister of pastoral care at First Baptist Church, Lubbock, Texas, officiating. Interment was in the Shattuck Memorial Cemetery.

Marie was a beloved resident of the Shattuck Convalescent Center since January 3, 2001.

She was born Jun 30, 1911 in Fargo. In May 1932 she married Jacob Deal and together they raised five daughters; Amelia Schoenhals of Oklahoma City; Lehta Szkotniki of Erie, Pennsylvania; Lillian Kelln of Amarillo, Texas; Mollie Ann Smith of Tulsa and Virginia Helfenbein of Shattuck.

Jacob was employed by Santa Fe railroad for 28 years. In addition to being a wife and mother, Marie was employed by Pete Crouch at the Crouch Bakery for 16 years; by George Stienert at Stienert Cleaners for 16 years; an the Shattuck Convalescent Center for 13 years.

Jacob and Marie were charter members of St. Paul Congregational Church for 71 years, where she was active in the Ladies Aide.

Marie was an excellent homemaker along with her lifelong neighbor Mrs. Jim Ward, enjoyed many seasons gardening, raising chickens, canning and wallpapering together.

Marie always had a quilting frame up in the living room and was joined often by Mrs. H. H. Kelln where many quilts were completed. Marie always found time to keep flowers blooming in her yard and canned cherries and apricots from the trees in the yard. Marie was a loving grandmother and opened her home to Melena and LaDena so that they could live in town and work part time at Newman Clinic whey they finished high school.

Marie was happiest when she was able to do something for someone else. She had a host of friends and loved having company, especially her lifelong friend, Donna Crouch Detrixhe who faithfully visited her every evening for 19 years.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob in 1968, four son-in-laws; Fred Schoenhals, John Szkotniki, Edgar Kelln and Melvin Helfenbein; one grandson Scott Smith, son of Mollie Ann and Howard Smith of Tulsa.

Marie was the much beloved grandmother of 17 grandchildren,32 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. Interment was in the Shattuck Memorial Cemetery, Shattuck, Oklahoma with the Mason Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
