Bertha graduated from The Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania. On May 6th 1891 as Physician and surgeon.
After graduation, Bertha visited her Brother and Mother. Her brother James King Hastings had made the land run of 1889 homesteading on the west end of Payne county. She went for a visit and stayed. She became acquainted with Capt William H. Campbell and they were married in 1892. Dr. Bertha (Hastings) Campbell served Mulhall-Orlando and surrounding area, from 1891 – 1901 when the family moved to Anadarko, Ok.
William and Bertha had one son together. Willard was born August 17, 1894. William’s first wife died and he had a son Henry and a daughter Faith.
“Her services covered a practice as various as human ills and physical accidents and casualties. For the first few years after the opening of the territory, though the country was occupied by settlers, there were no well-defined roads over much of the country, not even trails, and she was in those early days sometimes caught twenty miles from home at dark alone with only a horse and buggy. In those days there were coyotes, wild cats, wolves, catamounts, cowboys and train robbers. It is needless to state that she carried a revolver in the buggy for emergencies , as well as a full set of surgical instruments. Written by her husband William Campbell to the Women’s Medical college after Bertha’s death May 12, 1911.
See husband William Campbells bio.
