"The Evening Democrat succeeded the State Herald, established in May, 1889....The Herald plant was purchased by messrs. Sykes & Whorton who established the Democrat, which was published until June, 1890, when the plant was bought by Mr. J. B. Fugate." The latter sold out to Simpson and Deatherage. Simpson was born at Alexandria, Virginia, in 1850. He was a lawyer by profession. He arrived in Oklahoma in October, 1889. Frank A. Deatherage was a native of Tennessee and a practical newspaper man. He came to Oklahoma in July , 1890.
