Della B. Hines was born February 11, 1874, at Churubusco, Whitley county, Indiana, and died June 27, 1903, at 5:30 a.m. at her home near Mansfield, Missouri, aged 29 years 4 months and 16 days. In 1888, she came west and lived with her sister, Mrs. E. Kuhlman, at Arkansas City. In 1891, she came to Mulhall which was her home until May 30, 1900, when, with her husband, she removed to Pawnee, Oklahoma. She was married to Ward B. Hitchcock, agent of the A.T.& S. R.R. Co. here, January 1, 1894. Three children were born to them; Corinne, aged 8; Clelland, 6; and baby Dewitt, 5 months. Mrs. Hitchcock had not been well for several months but within the past few weeks her disease developed and when here the last days of May and the first of June, she was an invalid. She was, however, anxious to join her husband who had preceded the family to make ready for them, in what they hoped was to be a happy home, on a farm recently purchased near Mansfield, Missouri. Though quite weak, on June 6th, she undertook the journey and stood it better than was expected, her sister, Mrs. Kuhlman, and Miss Lina Wise accompanying her. For a time after her arrival, she appeared better, but ten days before her death, she began to fail and sunk rapidly until the end came. The immediate cause was heart trouble and brights disease.
In the loss of his wife, Mr. Hitchcock is left in a peculiarly trying position, having his own children and two orphan children of his brothers, Lura aged 13 and Vera aged 11 (whom they had undertaken to care for) in their charge. Mrs. Kuhlman will care for baby Dewitt for the present.
