Sister Mary Stephen Higgins, OSB, entered eternal life Feb. 19, 2001, at St. Joseph Monastery, Tulsa, Okla., at the age of 87.
Sister Mary Stephen was born Mary Frances Higgins in Nowata, Okla., Sept. 20, 1913, the daughter of Clarence and Anna Elizabeth (Kill) Higgins. She entered the Benedictine community in Guthrie on June 6, 1934 and pronounced her monastic vows on Jan. 6, 1936.
Sister Mary Stephen's ministry assignments included teaching at St. Joseph Academy, Guthrie; St. Michael's School, Henryetta, Okla.; Marquette and Monte Cassino and Benedictine Heights College, Tulsa. A devoted daughter, she cared for her mother in Stroud from 1976 until her mother's death in 1988.
She joins in eternal life her parents; stepfather, Jay Langley; her brothers Jack and the Rev. Bill Higgins, CPPS. She is survived by her Benedictine Sisters; immediate family, Mrs. Jack (Lena) Higgins of Tacoma, Washington, Mr. and Mrs. George (Bobbie) Langley of Edmond, Okla., Mr. and Mrs. J. D. (Emily) Langley of San Diego, Calif., and Mrs. Don (Mozelle) Wolfe of Salisbury, Maryland; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and her adopted family, Dr. and Mrs. Kenneth (Anne) Gluski and Christopher of Galveston, Texas. Sister Mary Stephen is remembered for her love of arts and crafts, her kind words of encouragement to all and her great faith.
Visitation will be at St. Joseph Monastery, 2200 South Lewis Avenue, Tulsa, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22. Evening Prayer will be Thursday at 5 p.m., Monte Cassino's Marian Chapel. The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 1 p.m., Friday, at Monte Cassino's Marian Chapel. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Tulsa.
