Funeral services for Vance Allen Kellogg of Guthrie will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 26, 2003 at the First Christian Church, Guthrie, Oklahoma with Reverend Dennis Clark officiating.
Kellogg was born to Edna (Luckinbill) and Allen Kellogg on March 29, 1927. He graduated Guthrie High School in 1945 and entered the U. S. Navy immediately upon graduation. Upon returning from the Navy, he entered Oklahoma A. & M. College (Oklahoma State University), Stillwater, and graduated in 1950 with a degree in Agriculture Education. He was hired by Drummond Public Schools to create a new Agriculture program. He later returned to Guthrie to the family dairy farm and cared for his aging parents. He married Carleta McCracken of Ames, Oklahoma in 1952. To this union two sons, Dennis Allen and Joe Randall, were born.
Kellogg was active in Future Farmers of America and mentored countless young men and women of Guthrie. He also was recognized as an Honorary State Farmer. Kellogg was active in county government from 1981 to 1999, serving as Logan County Commissioner for four terms and President of the Northwest District County Officers and Deputies Association (1997-98). Kellogg was active in a number of local organizations including the First Christian Church, Harmony Church, Edmond-Guthrie Shrine Club, Guthrie Masonic Lodge # 162 (32nd degree Mason), Shrine Sportsman Club, Seward Cemetery Association, and Guthrie Rotary Club. While in Rotary, he hosted a foreign exchange student, Gil Quadrado from San Paulo, Brazil.
After his retirement, Kellogg continued farming and developed a love and skill for cooking and feeding large crowds.
Kellogg died in Edmond Medical Center Friday, August 22, 2003, after a prolonged illness. He is preceded in death by: his parents; his oldest son, Dennis; his brother-in-law, Ethridge Berg; and his brother and sister-in-law, Walter and Marguerite Kellogg. He is survived by his wife, Carleta, of Guthrie; one son, Joe (Randy) and wife Melody of Guthrie; two grandsons, Michael and Elias of Guthrie; his sister and brother-in-law, Ethel Lois and James Corforth of Pomona, CA; his sister, Irma Berg, of Guthrie, OK; and countless others relatives and friends. Services will be directed by the Smith Funeral Home with visitation available August 25, 2003.
