Funeral services for Elmer Mitchell, 73, of Tallahassee, Fla. will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2003 at Smith Memorial Chapel in Guthrie with the Rev. Clyde Richmond of Macedonia Baptist Church in Guthrie with the Rev. Clyde Richmond of Macedonia Baptist Church in Guthrie officiating. Burial will follow in SUmmit View Cemetery in Guthrie under the direction of Smith Funeral Home in Guthrie.
Elmer was born May 4, 1930 in Guthrie to Frank and Alice Mitchell. He died Tuesday, June 17, 2003 at Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City.
Elmer was a retired history professor at Tallahassee Community College in Tallahassee, Fla. and a member of the Langston University Alumni Association.
Survivors include five nephews, Willie Triplett and his wife Myrtle of Wichita, Kan., Emmitt Mitchell and his wife Karen of Overland Park, Kan., Arnold and his wife Regina Mitchell of Lake Mary, Fla., Dwayne Mitchell of Oklahoma City and Denzel Mitchell, Sr. and his wife Janice of Guthrie; three nieces, Alice Gales and her husband John of Fort Worth, Texas, Malvena Mitchell of Independence, Mo., and Marjorie Mitchell-Penn and her husband Ambrose Penn of Grandview, Mo.; and one brother, Thurman Mitchell of Wichita, Kan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Thomas Mitchell, Willie Mitchell and Green Mitchell, and four sisters, Beulah Mae Mitchell, Maudie Hamilton-Doss, Gladys Triplett and Evelyn Hill.
Visitation for family and freinds will take place Friday, June 20 until 8 p.m.
