Memorial services for Louis William (Bill) Merrell, 57, of Tonopah, Nev., will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001 at First United Presbyterian Church of Guthrie. Services will be officiated by Rev. L. Dale DePue. A reception will follow the services at the Presbyterian Fellowship Hall.
Bill was born July 20, 1943 in Oklahoma City to Dr. Webber and Gladys Merrell of Guthrie. He died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001 in Pahrump, Nev.
Bill graduated from Guthrie High School in 1961 and received a B.B.A. in Finance from the University of Oklahoma in 1967. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force from 1967 to 1973 and earned an M.S. in Management from the University of Arkansas in 1973.
Bill returned to Guthrie in 1979 as owner of the Ben Franklin Store and was later employed as Director of Support Services for Guthrie Job Corps in 1984.
Merrell served as city councilman from 1981 to 1983 and as mayor from 1983 to 1985. He later worked as Director of Fiscal Services for the Oklahoma State Dept. of Education.
At the time of his death, Bill was director of Business and Finance for the Nye County School District in Nevada.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife Brenda of Tonopah, Nev.; one son, David Merrell and his wife Leslie of Edmond; one daughter, Michele Rayburn and her husband Joel of Bryan, Texas; the mother of his children, Judy Merrell of Guthrie; one sister, Carol Sue Hopcus and her husband Ken of Edmond; one brother, Robert Merrell and his wife Lori of Boulder City, Nev.; and one step-grandson, Mason Dailey of Edmond.
