A memorial service to celebrate the life of Zula C. Poer, 86, formerly of Guthrie, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 29, 2003 at the First United Methodist Church of Guthrie, 224 E. Noble, with the Rev. Terry Martindale officiating.
Zula was born March 10, 1917 i Holdenville, Oklahoma as Zula C. McCourry, the second daughter of James Augustus and Mirtis Ethel McCourry. She passed away peacefully on June 15, 2003 in Dallas, Texas.
She was raised in Holdenville and graduated from Holdenville High School. She married Leon M. Poer in 1935. They lived in Norman, Duncan, Oklahoma City, and for a brief time, Marfa, Texas. They moved to Guthrie in 1948 when Mr. Poer became the vice-president of Oklahoma Furniture Manufacturing Company in Guthrie.
Zula was very active in the community as a member of PEO, the DAR, a former member of the Board of Trustees for the First United Methodist Church, the Girl Scouts, the Guthrie Garden Club and Beta Sigma Phi. As an acknowledgement of her service to the Girl Scouts she was awarded the highest possible adult honor, the "Thanks" badge, by the Redlands Girl Scout Council. As part of her work with the garden club, she was very active on the project to place the "Welcome to Guthrie" signs that currently greet our visitors. She was largely responsible for the restorations of the stained glass windows at the First United Methodist Church and for the installation of the elevator which currently makes access easier for many of the older members. She had been a resident fo Dallas, Texas for the last year.
Zula was the mother of four children, John M. Poer, Robert E. Poer, Cathrin S. Poer and Mark A. Poer, all of whom survive her. Survivors also include three daughters-in-law, Carolyn A. Poer, Linda K. Poer and Lenora K. Poer. There are nine grandchildren, Holly L. Poer, Heather N. (Poer) Hughes, Elizabeth Poer, Susie (Poer) Whitman, Kimberly Poer, Gregory M. Poer (deceased), Nicholas E. Smith, Sarah K. Poer and Keith A. Wishon. There is one great-grandson, Elliott A. Hughes.
Instead of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made tot he charity of one's choice in memory of Zula Poer.
