Services for Everett Leroy Sears of Guthrie will be held Wednesday, September 23, 2003 at 2 p.m. at the First Southern Baptist Church in Guthrie, Oklahoma. Pastor David Nolen will be officiating under the direction of Smith Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Oakland Knowles Cemetery. Leroy was born in a box car along the Santa Fe line in Chilocco, Oklahoma, to Everett and Ella Grindle Sears. He went to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 20, 2003. He was raised north of Guthrie in Abell community attending North Riverside School. He entered the U. S. Army in 1946. After service, he married Voneta Denny on July 17, 1948. Leroy also excepted Christ that same year. He owned and operated the City Master Cleaners in the 50's and 60's. He also served on the Guthrie Police Department for 24 years starting on September 1955, retiring as chief in September 1979. After retiring he and Voneta owned and operated a ceramic business for 23 years. Leroy also worked as an armed guard for 10 years at the Kerr McGee Cimarron Facility.
Leroy was a member of Masonic Lodge #35, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the First Southern Baptist Church.
He was proceded in death by his parents, Everett and Ella Sears and one brother, Cecil.
Leroy is survived by wife Voneta of the home; two daughters, Sharen Bowers and husband Steve and Dianna Johnson, all of Guthrie. Four grandchildren, Sharman Jones and husband Shawn, Stephanie Hastings and husband Scott, Jeremiah Johnson and wife Donette, and Shane Bowers and wife Marissa, all of Guthrie. Six great-grandchildren; Shayla Jones, Landon, Sarah, Connor and Maddison Hastings and Emma Bowers, all of Guthrie. Also three step great-grandchildren, Stephanie Lorenz, Colby Wagner and Collin Duel. Also three brothers; Melvin and wife Kathleen of Grove, Oklahoma, Raymond and wife Velda of Guthrie, and Calvin and wife Jane of Texas. Also two sisters, Ella Mae VanOrder of Guthrie and Vernona Ham and husband John of Edmond. Also many nieces and nephews, and friends.
Memorial may be made to First Southern Baptist Church building fund. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home until 8 p.m. tonight and Wednesday until 11:30 a.m.
