Patricia Sue Shields Johnston Thomas, 90, a homemaker, died Dec. 28, 2003, in Guthrie. A graveside service was held at Fairview Cemetery in Shawnee today at 2 p.m. Gifts in Patsy's memory may be made to the First United Presbyterian Church, 102 E. Noble, Guthrie, Oklahoma 73044; Free to Live, PO Box 130072, Edmond, OK 73003, or to a favorite charity.
Patsy was born March 24, 1913, in Haileyville to Walter H. and Maude Kitchell Shields. The family moved to Shawnee in 1926 where Patsy graduated Shawnee High School in 1930. She attended Oklahoma City University. She married her high school sweetheart, William E. "Bill" Johnston, also a student at OCU. The couple eloped to Lawton and were married by the Rev. John H. Lamb, who was also the great-grandfather of a future granddaughter-in-law.
Patsy and Bill were charter members of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Oklahoma City. Bill died in May 1957.
Patsy married Lewis C. Thomas, a native of Ada in March 1969, and they retired to Guthrie in 1974. Lewis died Jan. 1, 1999.
Surviving are four children and a step-daughter; Judy Johnston Turner and husband Ben, Edmond; Linda Johnston Stoneman, Santa Rosa, Calif.; Pat Johnston and wife Jan, Oklahoma City; Mike Johnston, Oklahoma City; Virginia Thomas Schubert and husband, Dick, McLean, VA. Also surviving are grandchildren, Margaret Sue (Peggy) Turner, Oklahoma City; Patricia Turner Hopkins and husband Glenn, Rocky Point, NY, William B. Turner, Ph.D., Madison, WI, Timothy G. Turner and wife Melissa, Edmond, Elizabeth Turner Janney and husband Jeff, Cleveland Heights, OH; Master Sgt. Gary Stoneman and wife Rachel Barksdale AFB, LA; Lee Stoneman, El Reno; Michael R. Johnston and wife Jenny, Omaha, NE; Kelsey Johnson, Norman; Kristin and Matthew Johnston, Oklahoma City. Patsy is also survived by seven great-grandchildren.
Patsy's first husband, Bill, was the youngest of six children. She always said she married him for his family since she was an only child. She is the last of that generation. Surviving from the next generation in Oklahoma City are nieces and nephews; Beverly Carr Gray, John Carr, Jim Carr, Jeanette Johnston Caston, Nancy Johnston Records and Charles R. "Bob" Neale.
