Hugh Douglas (Doug) Woodruff of Guthrie, Oklahoma, departed this life Tuesday, September 30, 2003, at Integris Baptist Medical Center following a lengthy illness. Doug was born August 5, 1950 in Holdenville, Oklahoma, to Arthur H. and Vesta L. Chronister Woodruff.
Doug attended schools in Calvin, Del City and Holdenville, Oklahoma. He graduated from Holdenville High School in 1968. He then entered St. Anthony's School of Radiological Technology. He received the coveted Squibb Award for outstanding Tech Student. Following his graduation in 1971, he worked at hospitals in Oklahoma City, Holdenville and Sulfur, Oklahoma. Doug entered the United States Air Force where he served as an X-ray technician and radiological technical instructor at Vandenberg Air Force Base in Lompoc, California. After retirement from the United States Air Force, Doug attended what is now University of Central Oklahoma, receiving a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. He also completed several hours of post-graduate work. He served as President of the Alpha Chi Honor Society.
On August 5, 1977, he married Eldonna Sue Anderson at Central Assembly of God in Edmond, Oklahoma. They served as missionary associates at the International Correspondence Institute in Brussels, Belgium for one year. After returning to the United States, he worked as a computer programmer at the T G & Y Headquarters.
Following illness Doug began his greatest challenge as "Mr. Mom." He later worked as a social security disability examiner for seven years. Illness forced early retirement.
Doug enjoyed travel, computers, Southern Gospel music and his family and friends. He served his church as pianist or organist for several years. Doug attended Cathedral of the Hills Assembly of God in Edmond, Oklahoma
Doug is survived by his wife of 26 years, Eldona Woodruff and a son, Michael Woodruff of the home; two daughters, Rebecca Woodruff of Oklahoma City; and Miranda Woodruff of Edmond, Oklahoma. He is also survived by a sister, Jean Bales and her husband, Robert of Klamath Falls, Oregon; one brother, Bob Jackson, and his wife, Shirley, of Hulbert, Oklahoma. Survivors also include his parents-in-law, Rev. Eldon and Carolyn Anderson, and many other loving family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Woodruff and Vesta Woodruff, two brothers, Gerald Lee Jackson and James Arthur Woodruff and a niece, Starla Bales.
Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday October 4, at Cathedral of the Hills in Edmond, Oklahoma, under the direction of Smith Funeral Home of Guthrie, Oklahoma. Interment will be at Memory Gardens in Guthrie, Oklahoma.
Visitation for friends and family will be held until 8 p.m. tonight.
