At Orlando

At Orlando

September 15, 1893 - The Hennessey Clipper

Submitted by: Mollie Stehno

White Eagle-The sun beat down on fully 15,000 home seekers at Orlando today and the scarcity of water and the immense cloud of dust that filled the air made life unbearable for the most of them. Crowds still continue to arrive and tonight the total men in line at Orland reached 3,000. A police force has been formed to look after thieves, who are plenty. A Kansas Cityan was today relieved of his watch and $35, leaving him broke. Others have been buncoed out of their money. There are a large number of women ready to make the run on the 16th. Bicycle races are plenty.
Among the crowd are men old as Methuselah; yet they think that they will make a winning race. There is one old fellow here named Baker, who is not less than 80 years of age, but who swears that he will get a claim or die. He has two revolvers swung at his hips, and is as confident as a young man of 20.
The few doctors in the crowd are making money, and from the looks of things they are likely to reap a harvest. The change in water is causing much sickness. Food and very poor food at that, is commanding big prices. A small sandwich costs 20 cents; a bottle of beer costs 75 cents; lemonade is 15 cents a glass, and a cup of coffee costs 15 cents.
Three hundred Texans arrived in Guthrie this morning and are in the streets feeding their teams and taking in supplies. Ex Gov. Steele, now a resident of Indiana, will arrive tomorrow, in company with a number of others. Just what they are coming for is not known.
A greater number of professional gamblers and "sure-thing" men were never seen before. There is a report going the rounds that a gang, headed by Bill Dalton, intends to loot this town on the 16th, unless preparations are made to defeat them. Such an undertaking might easily be made successful, for the town will be practically deserted on that day, because everybody will be gone to the strip.
