Ranch Lessees in Oklahoma Notified to Vacate Their Properties

Submitted by: Mollie Stehno

January 3, 1902—The Shawnee Herald—Guthrie—An immense buffalo bull was so injured in transferring from the Santa Fe stockyards to Pawnee Bill’s ranch south of town that he had to be killed. Major Lillie gave the meat to the Pawnee Indians for a buffalo dance. The Indians have been dancing, and pow-wowing ever since. They say the vast herds of buffalo are coming back to this country and many of the Indians have notified the white lessees to vacate their ranches at once, as they wish to lay the fences low so the buffalo will have full sway of the country. The white people in the remote parts of the reservation are coming into Pawnee and report the Indians are threatening them. Pawnee Bill has placed mounted guards around his buffalo ranch, as the Indians are camping in the timber west of there and in sight of the herd. From their actions he fancies they intend to liberate the herds and perhaps kill them. The United States Indian agent at that point has been notified and has made a repot to the commissioner of Indian affairs at Washington.
