Anna Canning (married Gray) was asked to ride at the front of the wagon as she was an excellent shot with a pistol and she scored most of their food during the trip and the run. Her pistol was sold out of the family by a youthful Winfield Conant Jr. (deceased at age 43); however my cousin Don Conant still has the shotgun Hayden Gray owned. Anna May Canning married Hayden Gray and they had one son Joseph who died at two years from an accidental poisoning, Sylvia Gray who married Ben Ashe, and Martha Mary Gray who married Winfield Conant. These are the parties in the Anna Canning Gray picture, i.e. Anna and Hayden Gray with their two daughters Sylvia and Martha Mary Gray.
