James W. and Mary L. (Taliaferro) Lovell and their five children came to Oklahoma in 1891 from Illinois. They bought land where the town of Lovell was later located and named after them.
The township founder James W. Lovell (1858-1914) and Mary L. (Taliferro) Lovell (1856-1915) are buried in the Oak Vew Cemetery three miles south of the town of Lovell.
James W. and Mary L. Lovell had nine children who grew up, married and settled on farms in the Lovell and Crescent area. Their names and birth dates are: Effie (Mrs. Joe McKeown) 1880; Grace (Mrs. Fred Scott), 1882; John (married Etta Sade), 1884; Elizabeth (Mrs. L. T. DeWitt), 1886; Luther (married Hazel Wood) 1891; Bessie (Mrs. Roy Wilbur), 1893; Jessie (Mrs. Robert Lane), 1893; Mary Ann (Mrs. Earl Baker), 1898.
