Hildebrand Cemetery

According to locals this was once a very large cemetery until a farmer, greedy for land gathered up the majority of the tombstones and threw them in a ditch. Some members of the Hildebrand family are buried here, as well as several Cherokee. The tombstones of A. Johns has Cherokee writing on it. During the Civil War a ford that crossed the Arkansas River was located just a short distance south of here. The ford was mentioned as Hildebrand's Ford in the books "War of the Rebellion". There is mention of a skirmish between the Federal and Confederate soldiers called the "Battle of Greenleaf Prairie" which was to have taken place just north of here. Information used here with the generous permission of Gary Lester, Braggs.
