A Brief History of
Payne County

Captain David L. Payne

Payne County was created from the original county. It was orginally "Sixth" county. Named for Captain David L. Payne, the leader of the "Boomers" who tried to settle in Oklahoma before its settlement was authorized by Congress.
Clerk of Courts has marriage, divorce, probate, civil court records from 1894;
County Clerk has land records.
