PATTON, Clarence M. Pvt. Inducted into service in April, 1944, Patton was taken prisoner December 20, 1944 in the Belgian Bulge after two months of combat. Following a a 30 day furlough with his wife and three children at 302 Main Street, and his father R. V. Patton, will receive treatment at McCloskey hospital.
Only son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Peil, Woodward, graduate of Tangier highschool, and at time of his induction July 30, 1942, was engaged in farming with his father. He was sent to the Pacific war zone Aug. 16, 1943 and since has been stationed in the Netherlands East Indies. PEIL, Ralph H., Cpl.

Carl, 19, enlisted July 7, 1943, was on duty in the Pacific , transferred to Atlantic and as an armed guard on a cargo merchant ship, saw service in European waters, France, Belgium and England; now back in the Pacific , serving in the same capacity. Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Perrin, Woodward. Lucille enlisted in Air WAC September 19, 1944; trained at Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., and now in the classification department, Sebring, Fla. She was employed in defense work at Wichita, Kansas, before her enlistment. PERRIN, Lucille, Pvt.

PITTAWAY, August B., Cpl. Has been in service in signal corps on New Guinea and Philippines since leaving the States in October, 1943; entered the service August 31, 1942. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Pittaway of Mutual; is 23 years of age, and was a farmer.
PLANK, Charles C., Pfc. Has three years of service, now in Europe. Son of Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Plank, 972 6th street, he was employed at Martinson Grocery and U. S. Engineers at Dalhart, Texas.
PLANK, Wendell, Pvt. Sixteen months in hot Burma. Son of Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Plank, 972 6th street. Wife and two children reside at 711 Walnut. Before induction, Wendell was with U. S. Army Engineers on the Fort Supply project.
POULSON, John M., Pfc. 21-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Poulson, Woodward, enlisted in air corps, Feb 11, 1943, and sent to England Feb 1, 1945, and now stationed at St. Andre, France as aviation mechanic. He was employed by a construction company, Woodward army air base at time of induction.POUND, Jack, Lt. Son of Mrs. and Mrs. Elmer Pound, enlisted March 10, '42. Received wings at Douglas, Ariz. Injured in plane crash when at Columbia, S. C. base, still being hospitalized. In civil life Jack was connected with U. S. Engineers, Tulsa. Wife Elizabeth and Jackie Ann are with him.PRESNALL, Doyle Leonard, Sgt. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Presnall, Mooreland, graduated from Mooreland highschool in 1936. He studied two years at N. W. T. C., Alva, and enlisted in the air corps in September, 1940. We have no later information regarding this soldier as we go to press.PRESNALL, Lloyd Burke Enlisted in the Navy in June 1941. Following his graduation in school for aviation mechanics, was assigned to air craft carrier at Pearl Harbor. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Presnall of Mooreland.

QUICKEL, Harold S. "Brownie", Cpl. He is son of Mrs. Lula Quickel, Woodward. Has been in service three years. Left the States in May, 1942, and has served as radio operator with 8th air forces in England, and is now in Casablanca. He was employed at the Pantorium Cleaners when inducted. His twin brother, Buster, W. T. 3/c was killed in action in the Pacific.

Business now operated by Abe Razien and Louis Soloway.RECTOR, Eugene, S. 1/c Inducted into service August 28, 1943, went overseas July 1944 and stationed on Guam at Naval base No. 19, after serving in the Marianas. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Rector, Woodward, and was employed at the Hamblin Recreation Parlor when he entered the Navy.
REED, Evan W., Sgt. Entered the armed forces Dec. 1942, and has been stationed on New Caledonia with the 6th Supply Depot 26 months. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Reed, 1601 9th street. His wife the former Marguerite Oyler is associated with the Williams Auto Co. Before entering the army Sgt. Reed was manager of the Star-Model clothing Store.REEVES, Charles F., M/Sgt. Enlisted in November, 1939, and been overseas several months with the 446 Bombing Squadron, 321st Bombing Group. A-1 mechanic, and the son of G. W. Reeves of Fort Supply. Miss Mary G. Richardson Daughter of Doctor and Mrs. J. H. Richardson, has been in Anchorage, Alaska since September, 1944, in the main office of the signal corps supply, American Air Forces at Fort Richardson. Miss Richardson is a licensed pilot, completing the pilot's course at Jonesboro, Ark.
RICHARDSON, Paul "Bill", CRM 23 year old son of Paul Richardson, Wichita, Kas, has served two years in the Pacific as chief radio man aboard his battle ship. He enlisted in Aug. 1942, and his ship has participated in eight or more battles. His wife lives at Enid. He is the nephew of Mrs. Dick Houston.RIGGS, Billy P., Pfc. Went to Hawaii in July, 1940; Guadalcanal, Dec. 1942; later at New Georgia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, returned to States and discharged Jan. 1945. Now attending school in Chicago. He is the grandson of Mrs. Bertha Allison, with whom he lived at time of enlistment in engineers, March, 1940. Parents are Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Riggs, Limon, Colo.
ROBERTS, George C., Master Sgt. Son of John R. Roberts, Medford, entered the service in March, 1942. In civilian life he was connected with the Robert Brothers Auto Supply, 8th and Main, with his brother Harold "Hi" Roberts. Has been overseas since September, 1943, with an 8th Air Force Fighter Group.ROBERTS, Jack O., T/5 20 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Roberts of Trinchera, Colo. and the nephew of Misses Florence Nettie and Ella Roberts of Woodward, with whom he lived while attending highschool. Volunteered in the AAF Dec. 1942, In Jan. '44 he went to the Mediterranean theater, where he is now serving with the 973 Sig. Sev. Bn. stationed in Italy.
ROBERTSON, J. B. Jr., Cox. . Son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Robertson, Woodward and Hardesty, has been in service two and a half years, now stationed in the Admiralty Islands in the ship repair unit.ROBERTSON, John, A.R.M. 3/c Son of Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Robertson, of Quinlan. Enlisted at the age of 17, December 17, 1942. Graduate of Quinlan highschool, and attended Northwestern State Teacher's College, Alva.ROBERTSON, Robert E., F1/C When inducted into service Jan. 1944, was with the FBI in Washington, D. C., as fingerprint classifier and tracer, is now serving as motor mechanic somewhere in the Pacific . He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Robertson, Woodward.
ROEDELL, Floyd J., Pfc. 20 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Roedell, Quinlan, and was farming with his father when inducted into service, September 14, 1943. Left the States March 31, 1944 for duty in New Caledonia, New Zealand and New Guinea, with the 43rd Reconnisance Mec. troops; was in invasion of Luzon, January, 1945. His division recently captured almost a regiment of Japs and equipment near Ipo dam.
ROMMEL, Ivry, S/Sgt. Enlisted April 15, 1941, and in the European theater with H/S Co., 522nd Engineering Battalion. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Rommell, formerly of Sherman, now living at Blackwell.RUSSELL, John C., RDM 3/c Twenty year old son of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Russell, Woodward, inducted into the Navy, September 27, 1943. on December 1, 1943, assigned to his destroyer and sent to the Pacific . In March, 1945 Russell spent a two weeks leave at home. He has stars from seven major invasions, Saipan, Leyte, Ormac Bay, Eniwetok and others.

SAVERE, Max R., Lt. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Forest Savere, Mutual. Entered service May 7, 1942, spent several months in the Southwest Pacific as meterologist, then returned to the States for a period before reassigned for periods in Pacific on secret missions. His wife lives in San Francisco., Calif.
SAWYER, Murlin, Lt. of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sawyer, in service several years, completed a years service and 67 missions with the Ninth Air Force n Europe, and returned to the States in August, 1944. He has been at the Dodge City, Kas., air base as instructor in flying B-26's, until the recent closing of that base and is now stationed at Laughlin Field, Del Rio, Texas. He holds the Air Medal and seven clusters, the Distinguished Flying Cross, two battle stars and the presidential unit citation. He is married and his wife is now with a sister at Buffalo.
SCATES, Kenneth L., Cpl. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Clint L. Scates, in service three years and overseas for two years with the 88th QM Company, 5th Army. When at home helped Dad and Mom on their farm, southwest of Woodward.SECRIST, Charles F. Jr., Pfc . Son of Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Secrist, Woodward, went overseas in February, and now in Germany with 86th Division, Third Army. Has been awarded combat Infantry Badge for satisfactory performance of duty against the enemy. Now stationed near Germany.
SHAUL, Clarence R., Cpl. Thirty-seven year old son of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Shaul, Woodward, in service since Sept. 1940, went overseas with the 45th Div., in June 1943, saw service in North Africa, Salerno, Sicily, Anzio, made landing in France in 1944, and in Germany. Now enroute home. His Infantry Division commended for their outstanding tasks between Mar. 15 and April. 21, 1945.
SHELLHART, William E., A/C 22 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Shellhart, 973 7th, enlisted in the air corps, Dec. 9, 1942 and following radio, radar, gunnery, navigation, etc, is now stationed at the Amarillo, Texas AAF for a course in flight engineering. He graduated from Woodward highschool and Junior college, and attended A. & M. Stillwater, and Oklahoma University.
SHIPMAN, Russell, Cpl. Of Mutual, 22-year-old son of Fred Shipman, Atwater, Calif., is a member of the office personnel at the Merced, Calif., army air field. His wife, the former Dorothy Haskett of Mutual, lives at nearby Atwater. He is a nephew of Mrs. A. J. Craighead, Woodward.SILLS, L. O., S.M. 1/c Fifteen months in service, now in the Pacific . Sills, former Journal printer, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Sills. His wife and small daughter reside at 1422 6th Street.SMALES, George Everett, Jr., T/3 Now home on furlough, was inducted Dec. 11, 1942 and received training at Fort Sill. Overseas 16 months with F. A. Smales was a prisoner of the Germans 4 1/2 months. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Everett Smales. In civil life employed at Long-Bell Lumber Co.SMITH, Johnny B., Pfc. 19 year old grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Smith, Fort Supply, left the States May 8, 1944, serving with 41st Inf. Reg. in Germany; wounded in September, 1944 and received Purple Heart, also Sharp Shooter Medal.SMITH, Kenneth R., Lt. Enlisted August 22, 1940, QM., detachment and trained at Fort Sill; entered Officers' Candidate school in December, 1942. In August 1943, was sent to the Atlantic as a transport officer; returned to the States and in December of that year was sent to the Southwest Pacific , and is now stationed in the Philippines. He is the son of Mrs. J. E. Smith of Kiowa, Kas.
SMITH, Melvin Eugene, S1/C Nineteen-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest A. Smith of Woodward, enlisted April 1, 1944; left the States November 23, 1944; made the Iwo Jima, Iwo Shimo, Okinawa and other invasions.SMITH, Robert A., Jr 23 year old son of Mrs. Gladys Smith, Woodward, has had four and a half years service.Pvt. Cecil Snow Son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Snow just returned following tow and a half years service airplane mechanic, and later transferred to the Infantry and serving in Germany. Prior to that he served with the National Guard unit and 45th Div.
SPENCER, Hugh D. 24 year old employee of the Long-Bell Lumber Co., volunteered in the 158th F. a., 45th Division. Son of John Spencer.
SPURLOCK, J. C., Coxs. Serving aboard and APA boat in Pacific since June 1944; was inducted into service Dec. 5, 1943, while employed as ship builder in San Francisco, where his wife lives.
STAATS, George V., Lt. Is now with the air transport command in India, since going overseas the last of February. Son of Mr. and Mrs. G. G. Staats, Oklahoma City, Lt. Staats was employed at the Hickman Electric at the time of his induction early in the war. His wife and two children live in California.
STAATS, Forrest Leo, Pfc. Pfc. Forrest Leo Staats Son of Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Staatz, Oklahoma City, Received the Purple Heart for wounds received in Germany. His wife, Betty Jean and Forrest, Jr. live at Fargo.STANLEY, Joe F., Sgt. Son of Mrs. W. S. Odell, Woodward, entered the service in December, 1941, and has been in the Southwest Pacific 37 months. Recently awarded the Combat Infantry Badge for exemplary conduct under fire, in now in action in Northern Luzon.STARNES, William N., Jr., Pvt. Son of Mr. and Mrs. W. N. Starnes of Maplewood, La. Enlisted in the Marines in February, 1944. Graduate of Woodward highschool. Now in the Pacific theater.Pfc. Walter G. Stenglemeir Only son of Mrs. and Mrs George Stenglemeir, Woodward, was inducted April 12, 1944, left States February 17, 1945, and after serving in Germany with Third Army, is now in France awaiting shipment home for furlough and reassignment. His wife, the former Mildred Garten and their two sons live at 614 Maple.
STIMMEL, Floyd D., Col. Son of Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Stimmell southeast of Woodward, entered the service April 16, 1942. Graduate of Mooreland highschool, and is now stationed in Hawaiian Islands.
STRAIN, Ralph J., A.M.M. 2/C Has been in service February, 1942, and for 21 months in the torrid southwest Pacific . His parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Strain, resides at 975 Second Street. He will make his home in Hutchinson, Kas.
STRICKER, Ruben, Pfc. Entered the service Dec 10, 1943; left States Jan. 1945, serving in Germany with Third Army as cook's helper and interperter and now in Austria. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Striker live in Fargo. His wife, county teacher, lives with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Shaeffler.STUMP, Eugene M., Chaplin Captain Stump son of Mr. and Mrs. L. H. E. Stump, Mutual, has served in Italy, Africa, Corsica, and now with 14th Air Service Group. He was pastor of Christian church, Rubert, Ida., when he enlisted.Back to Top

THOMPSON, Faris, R.M. 3/C Son of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Thompson, Mutual. Graduate of Mutual highschool, entered the Navy, February 4, 1944. Serving in the South Pacific .
TRENT, Robert B., Pfc. Trent Entered service April 12, 1944, and on Feb. 17, 1945, sent to Europe, and served in Infantry with Third Army in Germany. Now returned to France, expects to come for a short furlough before reassignment. His wife, the former Ruby Rutledge and two children live at 1511 Texas
