Woodward, Okla. — Florence (Flossie) Gearldine Balfour, 79, of Whitefield, OK passed away Friday, May 29, 2009 in Stigler, OK. Flossie was born September 16, 1929 in Beaver County, OK to Frank and Opal (Glidewell) Johnson. A celebration of her life will be held 6:00 P.M., Saturday, June 6, 2009 at Whitefield Baptist Church. A second Celebration of Life Service will be held 6:00 P.M. Saturday, June 13, 2009 at The Apostolic Faith Church in Laverne, OK.

Flossie graduated from Laverne High School in 1947 where she was an outstanding basketball player and a member of the 4-H Club.

Flossie married Arthur Eugene Balfour on August 26, 1947 in Canadian, TX. They spent a short time in California before returning to Oklahoma where their children, Cheryl Kay, Roy Eugene and Michael Lee were born.

In the late 1950’s Flossie moved to Woodward to raise her children. She worked as a waitress at the Pollyana Café before attending business college in Oklahoma City. Upon graduation, Flossie would begin her career with Oklahoma Natural Gas in Woodward. She eventually transferred to the Enid Office where she would work until her retirement in 1986. She remained active with the On-Goers, traveling to many destinations with them.

Flossie move to Whitefield in the late 80’s to be near her daughter and grandchildren. Flossie was very active in her community serving as Town Clerk of Whitefield as well as Minutes Clerk for the Whitefield School Board, she also worked at Whitefield Grocery.

Flossie dearly loved watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren play basketball and showing their animals. It wasn’t uncommon to see Flossie washing sheep, steers or pigs. She was an amazing seamstress, sewing many wedding dresses. She also was very well know to paint or wall-paper anyone’s houses if they would let her. She enjoyed playing bunko as well. Flossie could be seen driving her little green car to town to eat at her favorite place, Shelly’s. She attended Whitefield Baptist Church where she enjoyed the pot-luck dinners. Flossie will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl (Durfey) and husband Al Matthews of Muskogee; Her grandchildren, Dallas Hendrickson and wife Della, Kendra Beller, Beau Durfey and wife Amy, Blaz Durfey and fiancé Amanda all of Whitefield. Kriston Balfour of Checotah, Jessie Balfour and Jared Balfour of Morris. Daughter-in-law, Nancy Balfour of Checotah; her sister, Carol Weder and husband Bob; brothers, Bill Johnson of Woodward, Roy Johnson of Sheridan, WY, and Pete and wife Bonnie of New Braunsfel, TX. Great Grandchildren, Tadd, Ty and Elliot Hendrickson, Trevor Rutledge and Landon Durfey all of Whitefield. Special friends, Sonny and Iva Leird, and Helen Bolt.

She was preceded in death by, her parents, two sons, and a brother.

Arrangements are provided by King & Shearwood Funeral Home of Stigler.
