Funeral services for Roy Bender, 90-year-old Shattuck resident, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church in Shattuck. The Rev. Floyd Thiessen and Pastor Robert Sterie will officiate. Interment will be at Shattuck Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Johnsonís Good Samaritan Funeral Service. Roy Bender was born Dec. 17, 1917 on the family farm just south of Shattuck to Alex and Marie (Gronz) Bender. Roy grew up in the Shattuck area and on Dec. 15, 1941 he joined the United States Army where he served until 1945. He was the first cook in his company and was responsible for preparing meals for 350 soldiers. Roy married Lorene File in Lipscomb County in November of 1945. She preceded him in death in 1990. On March of 1994 he married Viola Marie Matt in Shattuck, where they made their home. Mr. Bender worked for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation for 26 years until his retirement; he then worked for Newman Memorial Hospital for 13 years. Roy was a member of Saint Paul Congregational Church in Shattuck. He liked being outdoors and working in his yard, but what brought him the most enjoyment in life was his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Mr. Bender died Jan. 31 at the Newman Memorial Hospital in Shattuck. He was also preceded in death by three infant sons, his parents, three brothers Bill, Alex and Alvin Bender and five sisters, Mary Kelln, Anna Ehrlich, Hannah Yauck, Esther Hunter and Lizzie Stahler. Survivors include his wife Viola of the home, one daughter Beverly Long of Shattuck; a son Robert Roy Bender of Corpus Christi, Texas; one brother and his wife Wesley and Zelpha Bender of Woodward; six grandchildren Lorri Corbin and husband Brad of Shattuck, Lonnie Long of Shattuck, Lyndall Long and wife Jessica of Yukon, Okla., Daryl, Jarod and Megan Bender of Corpus Christi; three great-grandchildren, Ellen and Courtney Long of Shattuck and Maya Bender of Corpus Christi; and other family and friends. The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Saint Paul Congregational Church Building Fund with the funeral home accepting the donations.
