Denzel Bliss, 87, of Woodward, passed away Thursday, April 3, 2008.
Denzel was born Jan. 13, 1921 in rural Woodward County to John and Estella (Lockhart) Callaway. Denzel attended several rural schools and graduated from Freedom High School in 1939. She and Vess Powders were married Dec. 9, 1939 and they farmed in Harper County. In 1946, they moved to their farm near Mooreland. Denzel worked many years at Trego Western Wear in Woodward and was an excellent seamstress. Vess passed away in 1986.In 1990, she married John Jones of Woodward. After a short, but happy marriage, John passed away in 1992. In 1997, Denzel married Vernon Bliss of Freedom and they resided on the ranch near Lookout until Vernon’s death in 2007. Denzel attended the First Christian Church in Woodward.
Denzel is survived by her son Vernon Powders, Alva, Okla., as well as her grandson John Powders, Alva., Okla., and granddaughter Laura Powders, Tulsa, Okla. She is also survived by two sisters, Mona Lou Tea and her husband Mel of Roswell, N. M., and Ann Tea and her husband Virden of Clovis, N. M. and many nieces, nephews and friends. Denzel was preceded in death by her parents and by two infant daughters, Karen and Sharon, her brother, Loren Callaway, and his wife Louise, and her daughter-in-law Sharron Powders.
Denzel will be remembered for her friendly and outgoing nature. She was a friend to all who knew her and her door was always open to the many people in her rich life. She will be missed by many.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at the First Christian Church in Woodward. Interment will follow at the Elmwood Cemetery in Woodward. Contributions may be made in her memory to the NWOSU Museum of Natural History, the Freedom Oklahoma Museum or the Alva Hospice. Services are under the direction of the Nichols-Zwanziger Funeral Home, Woodward.
