William Melvin Freeman (Bill) was born to Albert Asbury Freeman and Betty Irene (White) Freeman on Nov. 14, 1926 in Ellis County hear Higgins, Texas at their home. He was the middle child of seven children and the first boy. Bill passed away at his home in Fargo on Sept. 26, 2006 at the age of 79 years, 10 months and 12 days.

He attended school at Hopewell and Allmon through the eighth grade. As a young boy and teenager he loved to trap and hunt. His love for hunting stayed with him throughout his entire life. After marriage and a family, he usually found a way to make it to Colorado deer and elk hunting every fall.

As a teenager he worked for local rancher Verner Parker and farmer O. H. Richard. Of course, there was always a lot to do at home.

On May 7, 1945, he reported to Camp Walters, Texas to the Infantry Replacement Training Center and completed his training on Sept. 1, 1945, specially qualifying for rifleman. After spending some time in California, he was shipped to Japan just when the war ended and spent almost a year in Japan guarding the prison warehouse and other facilities.

After returning to the States and his service ended, he worked at various jobs. One was laying brick with brother-in-law Nolan Martin.
