Merle Hayter, 92-year-old resident of Woodward passed away at Saint Anthony’s Hospital in Oklahoma City on Wednesday, June 27, 2007. Graveside funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, June 29, 2007 in the Mooreland Cemetery with the Rev. Mike Smith and the Reverend Randy Hodgson officiating. Burial will follow with the Billings Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Merle Hayter was born July 19, 1914 in Waldron, Kan.; he was the son of Clarence A. and Minnie (Evans) Hayter. He was united in marriage to Frances F. (Chic) Benefiel on Oct. 12, 1935 in Woodward. She predeceased him in death on May 8, 2005. Merle and Chic began their life together in the Quinlan-Waynoka area, but moved to Woodward in 1959. Merle was a well known and long time cattle buyer and rancher operating for many years as Wheat and Hayter Cattle Company and also operating as Three-Forks Ranch in Colorado and Wyoming. In later years, he was also involved in several other businesses in the Woodward area.

He is survived by one daughter Merlene Board and husband John of Guymon; one son Gary Hayter and wife Dody of Mooreland; grandchildren, Kim Burk; Pam McDowell; Lizbeth Board; John B. Board; great grandsons, Ethan McDowell and Tyler McDowell.

Besides his wife, Merle was also preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Memorials may be made to the Woodward First United Methodist Church Building Fund with the funeral home accepting the memorials.
