Mary Ellen (Wylie) Shurtz was born on January 5, 1938 to James Franklin and Maude Maritha (Stokes) Wylie in the Sand Creek area near Quinlan, Oklahoma. She was raised in the Quinlan area and graduated from Quinlan High School in 1956. After graduation Mary moved to Wichita, Kansas where she met her future husband, Richard Wayne "Dick" Shurtz Sr. They were married on October 18, 1958 in Wichita, Kansas. They were blessed with two children, Richard Wayne Jr. and Sandra Kay. In 1959, they moved to Woodward where they have lived since that time.

Mary loved playing and traveling to play Bingo. Her family was her life, especially her grandchildren. Mary was very proud of the fact that she had two sets of grandchildren that were twins.

She is survived by one son, Wayne Shurtz and wife Cindi of Woodward; one daughter Sandra Harrison and husband Carl of Woodward; one sister, Bessie Donohue of Chicago, Illinois; four grandsons, Ronny Shurtz of Oklahoma City; James Shurtz and wife Nicole of Oklahoma City; John Shurtz and wife Tamara of Woodward; two granddaughters, Megan and Morgan Shurtz; and her other grandson Devin Harrison all of Woodward; one great grandson, Layne Shurtz of Woodward and was expecting her 2nd great-grandson in a couple of weeks; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dick on July 10, 1996, her 16 brothers and sisters, Ralph, Loreene, Delores, Leonard, Marie, Dorothy, Billy, Carol Ann, Margaret, Raymond, Jerry, Loren, Edith, Lowell, Ore and a still born brother.
