Obituary

Cordy George Spake was born November 2, 1900 near Cestos, Indian Territory, Oklahoma, to Jefferson M. and Aretta Huber Spake. He passed from this life on Monday, January 31, 2000 at the Vici Nursing Home having reached the age of 99 years. Cordy attended the Union and Billy Hunt Schools near his home. He was married to Agnes Parry, and to this union six children were born; Lucille, Lynn, Rex, Reta, Francis, and Cecil.

Cordy started farming at an early age, harvesting his first wheat crop at age 18. He farmed several years in the Cestos area and in 1939 purchased a farm east of Vici, where he raised his family and educated them in various schools in the area. Cordy worked at various jobs, including School bus driver for Vici School, Farmers Coop, Assn. and the Railroad before moving to South Gate, California in 1951 were he was employed in a glass plant. He married Octie Hayes on June 12, 1951 and brought her children, Calvin, Ellen, Irene, Lola and Otis into the family, whom he loved as his very own. He loved fishing, gardening and playing cards and dominos with his family and friends. He loved showing his beloved wife, Octie's handiwork and paintings to family and friends.

Cordy was a member and Deacon of the Vici Christian Church at the time of his passing, having transfered his membership from the South Gate, California church. He was a living example of what most families treasure -- he was stable, optimistic, trustworthy, supportive and so kind. He had a wonderful quality of bringing a smile to one's face. He brought lively conversation to daily life, family gatherings and visits with friends. Cordy shared his great wit and sense of humor at the most appropriate time. He always made you feel warm and welcome when sharing time with him. A greeting of a firm handshake, a pat on the shoulder of back, and the verbal expression of sincere joy in seeing you just felt genuine and loving. He has seen many changes in his 99 years of life. He was a true pioneer and will be dearly missed.

He retired in 1965, moving back to Oklahoma to the Grand Lake area. Here, he and Octie fished to their hearts content with many fish tales related to family and friends. They moved to Vici, Oklahoma in 1973 where both spent their remaining years. His devoted wife, Octie preceded him in death in May, 1997.

Cordy was preceded in death, also, by his parents, his ten brothers and sisters, Cady, Wilmer, Orley, Elmer, Gorman, Merl, Neva, Wilda, Veva, and Josephine; his daughter Lucille, and his son Cecil, grandsons Billy Spake and Mike Hinter and by two great-grand-daughters.

He is survived by three sons and their wives, Lynn and Mary Ann Spake, Rex and Faye Spake of Vici, Francis and Noyce Spake of Woodward, and daughter Reta Hunter of Woodward, Otis Hayes of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Calvin and Louise Hayes, Cache, Oklahoma, Ellen and Ross Bailey of Ponca City, Oklahoma, Irene and Ed Czarnick of Durate, California and Lola and Hillary Furlong of South Gate, California; twenty-seven grandchildren, thirty eight great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Donetta Castle; sister-in-law, Helen Spake of Salida, Colorado and Zelpha Spake of Enid, Oklahoma; nieces and nephews, and many loving friends.
