Delaware County, Oklahoma
Created in 1907 from Cherokee County. Named for Delaware district of the old Cherokee Nation. Delaware District took its name from Delaware Town which was located in the Spavinaw Hills in the early part of the last century. It was occupied by a band of Delaware Indians who left the United States and settled in Louisiana Province, then Spanish territory, shortly after the close of the Amercan Revolution.
