A.T.A. and Auxiliary, One of City's Oldest Lodges, Has 400 Members
Probably the oldest lodge organization in the city is the A. T. A., formerly the Anti Horse Thief Association.
"Fifty years ago, when the first A. H. T. A., lodge was organized at Odessa school, located 12 miles northwest of Arkansas City, there were no telephones. At that time members would form groups composed of 6 or 8 men each, headed by a captain, and in this manner would spread the alarm and trace horse thieves, that being the real purpose o the lodge at that time' said Alvin Goff, charter members of the Odessa lodge, and now vice president of the A. T. A., of this city. He said the Arkansas City lodge, No. 157, was not organized for several years after that. Then the Odessa lodge and the A. C. lodge were made one organization. The local lodge, with the auxiliary now has a membership of nearly 400. Lodge No. 157 is the largest in the state. The auxiliary is known as the most active women's A. T. A. order in Kansas, also.
Got The Horse Thieves
"And in those days we got the horse thieves, too" Mr. Goff added. "I have been a member for 50 years and have never had anything of enough value stolen from me to call on the order to hunt it up. That's what I call protection and splendid insurance." Mr. Goff can relate many interesting stories in regard to the old manner of chasing the thieves, under the rules of the old time organization.
"Once," he said, they caught a man who had stolen a horse belonging to a U. S. deputy marshal, near Wichita. The thief was caught with the goods. He said if he had known there was such an organization as the A. H. T. A., he never would have stolen the horse. Today the A. T. A. membership is made up mostly of auto owners, and persons who own anything of value that might be stolen. It is the rule of the officials of the order, to put officers on the job immediately, after being informed of a theft from a member.
Two officers of the law here are members of the lodge and they always get busy as soon as a theft is reported. They are Billy Gray and Jeff Byrom. The Arkansas City lodge meets twice a month in the new Woodmen hall, on East Central Avenue. The women's auxiliary meets on the same night, and usually after the lodge sessions, the two orders join for a social meeting.
Harry S. Brown is now serving his sixth year as president. He is also vice-president of the state lodge. Alvin Goff is vice-president; Ernest Lawson, recording secretary; Arthur Williams, financial secretary; Tom Casement, treasurer, and Jeff Byrom, doorkeeper. Mrs. George Bacastow is president of the auxiliary.
