Terrible Street Tragedy At South Enid, Ok.
R. W. Patterson, Register of the Land Office, and City Marshal Williams Dead
Editor Izenberg Seriously Wounded-Caused by a Newspaper Criticism

The Cherokee Advocate

July 4, 1895

South Enid, Ok., June 23-Two men dead and one seriously wounded is the record of a terrible tragedy that was enacted on the streets of this town last night. R. W. Patterson, register of the United States land office, and City Marshal Williams are dead with bullet holes in their bodies, and J. E. Izenberg, editor and proprietor of the Daily Wave, is at his home with a ragged furrow made by a bullet in the side of his face. The fight grew out of an article that Izenberg wrote and published in yesterday's issue of the Wave, criticizing the acts of Register Patterson.
After the paper had been circulated Patterson started for the Wave office to demand satisfaction. On the way he met Izenberg and took him to task for the article that had appeared in the Wave. The men quarreled and came to blows. City Marshal Williams ran to separate the men. Just as he ran between them Register Patterson whipped out a revolver and fired at Izenberg. The bullet struck Izenberg in the corner of the left eye and ran around the inside of his face.
Patterson then turned the weapon toward the city marshal and pulled the trigger. The bullet struck Williams in the right lung. He then drew a revolver and shot Patterson dead, a bullet striking him squarely in the center of the forehead. Williams was taken to him home, where he died in a short time.
