Indian Journal
January 4, 1886
The notorious Belle Starr walked into the U. S. Court room at Fort Smith last week and surrendered. A warrant was out for her charging her with horse stealing. She was formerly the wife of the Cole Younger of the Jesse James gang, and has herself, it is said, stolen horses and been in other business of the kind.

She was under arrest once near Muskogee, and while the guard was sleeping, she slipped up and getting his pistol, cocked it, as though she intended shooting him, when fortunately she lost her balance and came near falling. She put the muzzle of the pistol to the ground to support herself when it was discharged and the guard was awakened to his peril.

She was sentenced at that time for horse stealing for one year.
