January 19, 1887
Judge Parker’s strong arms have proven a constant terror to the whiskey peddlers in this immediate vicinity; hence their was no redness of eye, no reeling in the saddles, no random shooting off of pistol and the uttering of blood-curdling oaths during the holiday week. All was quiet.
Deputy United States Marshals are paying us a visit, and the result is many of our young men now clank the cold chain. The prisoners and charges against them as reported to us are:
Thomas Alexander, attempt to murder; John Davis (assumed name) for murder yeas ago in the state whence he hailed; Fuller Humdy, who served a term in Detroit penitentiary for murder, attempt to murder and other charges; John Tecumseh, for the murder of George Mack, the desperado of Dick Glass. While we do not object to the carrying out of the laws of the United States, or any other law to its fullest extent, we do think the arrest of John Tecumseh (f arrested for the murder of George Mack) an open encouragement to desperadoes, and an insult to the Seminole Nation. At the time when George Mack was killed, March 19, 1885, the Seminole Chief caused a thorough investigation of the matter to be made, since that was the day upon which George Mack, Rector Rogers and Paro Bruner attempted the murder of three Seminoles. After the Seminole Chief had the matter investigated he found that George Mack merited his death at the hands of John, and reported the same to the Judge and Attorney for the Western District of Arkansas. It was said the Chief received communication that John would never be molested. John never did scout. He told the Chief to tell the Judge if he were wanted he would come at any time.
