The Hennessey Clipper
August 5, 1898

The A. H. T.A. Lodge to which Bob McClung belongs offers a reward of $50 for the arrest of John Howerton. Last Friday night two fine mares belonging to Bob McClung were stolen. Pursuit was made early next morning. The trail was found, finally, and led northwest toward Kansas. Farmers saw a man and woman in a buggy leading the mares and these two were overtaken in the corner of Barber County, Kan. The man escaped, in his shirt and pants, over a steep embankment and the woman was caught, the horses recovered and the woman is now in Watonga jail. She is the wife of John Howerton. He is well known over at Vilas. He has served one term in the pen and if caught alive will do time again. Just a few cases of “frontier court” would end up this horse lifting and we hope to have a chance to mention some instances of these horse lifters climbing out on a limb and staying there to bloom.
