The Hennessey Clipper
June 17, 1893
Joe Bird, a Choctaw half-breed, was shot at 11 o’clock this morning at Wilburton by Sheriff John Perry of Gaines County. Two other men placed him on a plank and his hand help up while the sheriff knelt about five paces in front of him. A piece of white paper had been put over his heart as a target. The sheriff’s aim was true and the man fell over dead at the first shot.
Bird killed his mother-in-law in 1892, with an ax and entered a plea of guilty to manslaughter in the Choctaw court and was given 100 lashes. Afterward his wife would not live with him and on the night of April 26 he went to where she was staying caller her to the gate and shot her in the head. He surrendered to the United States authorities at Fort Smith and was by them turned over to the Choctaw authorities.
