Wellington, Kan., Jan 11, (UP)—“Red” Carson, suspected Oklahoma bank robber was shot to death on the streets here today in a pistol battle with three officials. Sheriff Jess Harrison was shot in the arm during a furious exchange of shots in front of the hotel where Carson spent the night.
The woman who officers said accompanied Carson to the hotel was arrested. Carson was wanted for questioning in the Willow bank robbery last week was a fugitive from the Pawhuska jail.
The Beckham County sheriff’s officer identified “Red” Carson as the “Buck” Carson who formerly lived in Sayre. It is reported that Carson was on his way to Sayre and that he intended to arrive here Thursday night.
Carson was wanted for questioning in the Willow bank robbery. The Willow bank was held pu by four men Thursday, January 4. Carson was reported to have been seen near Mangum before the robbery. State police were looking for him. He was also a fugitive from the jail in Pawhuska.
Carson served several sentences in the state prison at McAlester; being sent up from Beckham and Greer counties. County official have be looking for him every night this week.
